Remington 1875 - Need help to rate finish

Post by Maxi555 »

Hi,

I have a hard time to evaluate finish/blue on antique firearms. According to the pictures, how is the finish (%)?

Any advice to help me evaluate it?

Thanks

Hi Maxi555,

It is very hard to impossible to tell the condition of a finish in a photo. It really needs an in person inspection to tell what is good finish, and what is fading finish, and what looks OK maybe be patina, or discoloration, or touch up. It almost always requires inspection in good light to discern variations in finish. Sharp, clear, and well lit photos, can help, but nothing beats personal inspection. While your photos are basically sharp, it looks like there is a lot of patina and discoloration on your pistol. Fr all those reason, you may not find someone willing to make a guess. The grips are replacements, but that really means nothing. Has the bbl been cut down? What caliber is the gun?

thanks, and good luck,
Daniel

Thanks for the reply.

The caliber is 44 Rem. I do not know if the barrel was cut, but from what I read online, theres 2 way to tell if it was cut: if the front sight “doesnt look right” on the barrel and if the crown also doesnt look good/factory.

I wanted to have an idea on the % of blue left to know if it was a dealbreaker and then not annoy the seller with questions if I was not interested.

Hi Maxi,

Correct on the two methods of "guessing" if the bbl is cut. The short 75s are considered by most collectors, to be made in the later production of the 44-40s, so it's most likely that one in 44 rem is cut. How is the price, high because a short bbl is rare? Or more "reasonable" due to it's overall condition? Everyone has a different idea of what % the condition may be. It's not unusual for A to say 50%, while B says 60% for the same gun. What is important is that you are satisfied with the condition of the gun, and are willing to pay the agreed upon price. A general rule of thumb is that if you're not sure, then pass on it. You don't ever want to buy a gun you have to make excuses for.

Good luck what ever your decision,
Daniel

Hi again Maxi,

If you have photoshop, full or elements, or another photo processing program, open the photos of the gun and use the tools to lighten the photo. You can then see the condition much better.

No expert here, but a seasoned "observer"
The bluing on Rem 1875"s is almost always flaky on the frame.
Yours in not.

Hello Maxi,
If you revolver is indeed a 44 Remington caliber then the barrel has been cut. All of the 44 Remington caliber 1875 revolvers were originally manufactured with long barrels, pinched front sights and lanyard rings. What is the serial number of your revolver? Also does it have a flat top hammer with a rectangular firing pin or a round top hammer with a cone firing pin? Your revolver has a frame rebate and bevels in front of the cylinder and a blade front sight which are indicative of a later batch processed revolver.
