Yet another New Model 1858 question

Post by Hawthorne »

Hi! Another noob here.

I inherited a pistol and am trying to sort out which series it is. Based on barrel length is a Navy (if you measure to the inside of the breach. Serial numbers on the barrel and under the grip on the frame match, 16554, though there seems to be a 3 in front of that on the barrel.

How do we decode the serial number to sort out the date of manufacture? I know there's a book and loads of people can provide the date. I'm just enough of a nerd to want to know how the number translates to the date. And please, just tell me the date if you have that wizardry.

Thanks!

Hello,
Your pistol is an Elliot or Old Model Revolver. It was made in August of 1864.
The first Navy caliber revolvers made by Remington were the Beals Model. There were approximately fifteen thousand made. These were followed by the Elliot or Old Model of which approximately five thousand were manufactured. The final model was the New Model of which twenty two thousand were made.
There is no way to determine the date by looking at the serial number. The serial number information is found in the book, Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888 by Don Ware. He found the serial number /date information in the National Archives when researching information for his book. There is no wizardry. Your revolver seem s to missing the main spring.

Bill, thanks!

No wizardry... shucks. Yes, the main spring is broken. Might replace it and get it tidied to give to my uncle who got the other family firearms.

I appreciate the info.

George.

Hi Hawthorne,

Barrels can be cut. Navy Models are 36 caliber, Armies are 44. I disagree with Billt on the date. According to Don Ware’s book, 16554 would have been made in Aug 1862. Probably a typo on Bill’s part, he is just too accurate to make a mistake like this.

Sometimes Rem stamped the number 3 on guns that were returned to the factory for repair. If not that, then I have no idea what the 3 indicates.
