1858 New Model

Post by srma63 »

I have what appears to be a Remington 1858 revolver. The following marking have been found, as follows:

On the barrel top:
PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858
E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION.NEWYORK. U.S.A
NEW-MODEL
On the barrel underside:
115856
Under brass trigger guard:
(no markings)
Under the LH grip, bottom strap:
71566
Under the RH grip, side of front strap:
letter " T " with distinctive serifs on the cross stroke (as with New Times Roman typeface)

Other distinctive features/omissions:
8" octagonal barrel
The cylinder has the "safety slots" milled between the chambers
No cartouche or other markings visible
No markings on the grip panels

Welcome to the RSA forum,

Pictures are always the most helpful info you can send. Your barrel was made in Dec. 1864, while the frame was made in May, 1864. No way to know when, or why the bbl was replaced. No cartouche or single letter inspector’s marks means that this was a civilian market gun. There should be a serial number on the tab, of the trigger guard.

That’s about the best that we can do without pictures.
