Mystery Remington

Post by Caren »

I need some help from the experts. I picked up this piece for a reasonble price as a project gun. I am not sure of its lineage. It a appears to be a bit of a mix master and maybe a defarb and/or poor restoration based on melted lines and pitting under the finish. Here are some of the features portrayed in the attached photos:

Round barrel. “B” on the loading lever web. “J” on the left side of the frame. Grips with vintage appearance, with remnants of cartouche (CGC- Charles G. Curtis ???). Inside of grip marked “1861 AD”. Serial number 14094. No other identifying marks or proof marks on frame, barrel or cylinder.

Hi Caren,

Yup, it's a mix master! A new model army, with a replaced bbl. The inspector's marks, and the cartouche indicate government purchase. Any chance the number on the trigger guard tab matches the frame? Without marks on the bbl, it's just a guess where it came from. The frame is so heavily buffed that the edges are reshaped to a rounded contour, and the screw holes are dished. Does it have 2 mainsprings? We know that is wrong. The loading lever catch is either a replacement, or very highly modified original. Looks like the grip screw and eucshon are replacements. The cylinder pin is modified or a replacement. It was made in Feb, 1863.

Good Luck with your project,
Daniel

Thanks so much. Happy to hear that the frame, at least is legit. The "B" and "J" stamps looked about right to me, but I know less about the Remingtons than I do about my Colt Pockets. My plans are to clan it up, replace the nipples, fix the trigger guard (which by the way has no S/N), fix the curl on the stocks and make a decent shooter. If I get really ambitious, I will strip it and draw file the edges a bit and rust blue. It will be a fun project and be kind of unique.

Thanks again,
Caren
