Remington 1875 when manufactured and Bone grips

Post by John_A »

Hello,
Just picked up this Remington 1875 and would like your opinions.
I believe it was manufactured around 1880 based on the fact it has a mix new and old features.
Old Features:
1) barrel address E Remington & Sons reads from the frame to muzzle
2)Pinched front sight
3)old style trigger and trigger guard
New Features:
1) 44-40
2)cone style firing pin
3)recessed ejector housing (rebate)
The number 465 appears on the left grip frame, loading gate and trigger guard tab.
I'm going to guess the original left wood grip had a 44 on it.
Any guesses as to manufacturing date?
The bone grips are interesting. I haven't seen an 1875 with them before and very few Colts. Has anyone see something like this? Any guess as to what kind of bone?
The left grip is actually worn down where the thumb of a right handed shooter would lie.
Is there any special care that these need as I see the cracking.
Thanks for taking a look.
John

Hi John,

You've ID'ed all the pertinent features, so you probably know that all the 44-40s were batch numbered. As a result, there is no way to know when it was made. There is no record of specific points where we can say that in 188_ they went to the blade sight. Or, in 188_ they began marking the 44 on the frame ( or TG). So, we're all stuck without knowing when specific guns might have been made. Maybe Bill T will jump in. He is one of "the" experts on the 75s.

I'm the last guy to ask about bone grips, so we wait for someone who knows about them.

Enjoy your new acquisition.

Hi John,
I think you are pretty close on your estimate of the manufacturing date. I think between 1878 when Remington started manufacturing 1875’s in 44-40 and 45 caliber and 1879 depending on when Remington changed the caliber mark from the grip to the frame. You are most likely correct on your guess that the original grips had a caliber mark. You probably have a second serial number set or an early batch processed transition revolver. Remington never let anything go to waste and was probably using up parts left over from the early production revolvers. I have eleven revolvers in my database with trigger guard caliber marks that have barrels with pinched front sights.
There was an 1875 with either bone or stag grips that was auctioned by Gun Broker in January of this year. That is the only other 1875 I have seen.

Thanks much for the opinions Dan and Bill. The grips are what attracted me to this revolver since it makes it so unusual. Bill please add it to your database. Thanks again
