Hi Cindy,
Welcome to the forum. After looking at your pictures I am not sure what you have inherited. I suspect you may have a reproduction but I am not familiar enough with them to say for sure. What I do know is the following. In the first picture the number if it is a serial number is not where Remington put their serial numbers. Remington put their serial numbers on the frame under the left grip, on the trigger guard tab and on the inside arm of the loading gate. The number 20801 could however be a rack number added by the owner.
In the second picture the grips are not Remington. The Remington grips are not flat on the sides like the ones on your revolver and the screw enters from the left side of the gun not the right side. It looks like a hole has been drilled in the frame on the left side in front of the cylinder. I have never seen that on a Remington. Does it go all the way through the frame? It looks to me like there is a backing plate between the back of the cylinder and the frame. I have also never seen that on an 1875 revolver.
In the fourth picture the main spring is not a Remington factory part. In the Remington it is a curved piece of steel that runs from the slot at the bottom of the frame up to the trigger. The grip post in the middle of the frame is in the wrong place for a Remington revolver. On the Remington it is farther toward the heel of the frame and closer to the bottom of the frame.
In the sixth picture it looks like there were some numbers stamped in the frame, which somebody has tried to obliterate. That would be where Remington would have stamped their serial number on the frame. The line running below those numbers looks like an extension was added to the bottom of the frame. I have never seen that on a Remington 1875.
In the last picture the barrel address looks right.
It is quiet possible that you have an original factory Remington which has been modified after it left the factory. It may be that a person with extra large hands had the piece added to the bottom of the frame and had a set of custom grips made to accommodate the larger frame. It is also possible the mainspring broke and the one in your gun is a gunsmith replacement. Check to see if there is a number on the trigger guard tab. You will have to take out the trigger guard screw to remove the guard. Also open the loading gate and look from the back of the revolver at the arm that pivots out from the frame for a number. Please let us know what you find.

I hope this helps,
Bill

Hi Cindy,

The barrel, and chambers have been sleeved for a smaller caliber. Do you know what caliber it is now?
Do you have any idea of when it was converted? Does the cylinder turn freely?

Thanks,
Daniel

Looks like it started as an authentic 1875..
Looks like a spring out of an elliot.
I'm guessing this is a rimfire and not a lot of 44rf around for shooting.

Hi Cindy,
Were you able to remove the trigger guard (one small screw) and see the serial number stamped on the tang? Hopefully that wasn't obliterated also.
Thanks
