Remington New Army

Post by Kleffler »

I have a Remington New Army with serial number 104xxx on under side of barrel. Frame is different number same 104 but last three digits are about 600 off. Frame has later serial number. When was it manufactured and was it used in the civil war? Cartouche is visible on grips and rest of revolver has proper stamps. Works great with no pitting. I will attempt to post pictures. Also is there anyway to see who it was issued to?

Thanks in advance

Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Your revolver was manufactured in October of 1864. It was shipped to the Ordnance Department that month but unfortunately there are no records by serial number of if and to whom it was issued. From the condition of the revolver it probably did see some action. It looks like the grips have been varnished at some time after it left the factory. It is fairly rare but not unheard of to have the frame and barrel serial numbers different. I have recorded some sixty New Model Armies with mixed serial numbers. Most have a barrel with a lower serial number than the frame. During the inspection process when a part failed inspection it was removed and another was installed in it's place. When a frame failed inspection a large "C" was stamped on it and the other parts of the revolver were removed to be used on later revolvers. Your revolver probably had a barrel that failed inspection and it was replaced by one with an earlier serial number. If you would send me the complete serial numbers for your barrel and frame I will add them to my database.

Thanks,

Bill
