1858 Remington New Army 36 Calibre (I Think)

Post by chuckmerken »

About 35 years ago, my wife and I did a lot of exploring and four wheeling.

We were in Arizona the Great Basin area 30 miles out in the desert no roads and had driven up on a sand dune that was against a mountain, when we topped the sand dune there was about 100 yards between the sand dunes and the mountain.

There was a cabin that was partially standing. We had our metal detectors and started working in an area near the cabin and found this gun. The gun was in a holster but it had almost disintegrated.

It had five unfired rounds in the cylinder.

The serial number is 1274.

Any information would be helpful...

Nice find. Too bad it's not in shooting condition. Army models were usually 44 Cal while Navy models were 36 Cal.

Hi Chuck,

The gun is a New Model, and if the muzzle is too rusted to determine the caliber, measure the barrel from the cylinder face to the muzzle. A Navy is 7 1/2" while an Army is 8 3/8". There is a question on the serial number. If the gun is a Navy, then 1274 was made in July of 1861 and would be a Beals Navy model. If it is an Army then is was made in June of 1862 and should be an Elliot, or Old Model Army.

The serial will be on the lower left grip frame, under the barrel, and on the trigger guard tab if the screw isn't too rusted.

Did you take a pic of the cabin, or the dunes area? A pic like that would make a nice background for mounting, and framing this pistol for display.

A mice looking relic, enjoy your find.
