1958 New Model Army Percussion Revolver
My question really is, would this (1864) be the production date of this serial number, could it of been army issued in fact could of been used in the US civil war? Expected price in AUD about $1600.00.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Your revolver was shipped to the Ordnance Department in January of 1865. Unfortunately there are no records of to whom the revolver was issued or if it was issued.

Thank you, regarding the cartouche, is this like a inspectors mark? Did all 1858 revolvers have this added. What should the cartouche be if it was at all legible on this pistol?
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: 1958 New Model Army Percussion Revolver
All of the revolvers accepted by the Ordnance Department have at least one cartouche and some have two. The small letters found on the major parts of the revolver are inspection marks. Once the revolver passed inspection the principal sub-inspector stamped his cartouche on the left grip indicating the revolver was accepted. In his book Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861 -1888 Don Ware identifies twelve different cartouches of which five have been linked to actual persons. The known ones are CGC – CG Curtis, WAT – William Anderson Thornton, BH – Benjamin Hannis, GP – identified as Giles Porter but may be George Palmer and OWA – OW Ainsworth. The unknown ones are RPB, JWK, WC, WW, AW, GRC and PS.
