Hi, I was hoping someone might be able to provide date of manufacture and any other details of a pistol belonging to my late father.
The number on the underside of barrel and under the handle stock reads:
97***
Thank you for any info you might be able to unearth.
Best wishes, ken

Hello Ken,
From the serial number your revolver it is a New Model Army, which was manufactured in September of 1864. If it has small letters on the various parts and a cartouche on the left grip it was shipped to the Ordnance Department. If not it was probably sold to the civilian market.

Hi Bill
thank you for the information. Yes the pistol has a cartouche "O Ainsworth". Also there are heavy letter D's stamped on the various parts however there are much fainter B's marked on the cylinder and under the wooden stock which must be the original stampings. Were Remington using the B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X month back in 1864?
I'll put up a few photos soon. How would one go about finding out who the pistol was issued to or owned by?
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer

Hello Ken,
The BLACKPOWDERX method of date marking was not used in the 1860’s. Those letters found on the revolver parts are inspection stamps. Once all of the major parts had been inspected the cartouche of the Principal Sub-Inspector was added the left grip indicating the revolver was accepted by the Ordnance Department. To my knowledge there are no records by serial number of to whom the revolver was issued.

I would have expected some import stamp, no?
Lots of the firearms I see oversea's has sometimes many.
The ZigZag I found (off hand I think Germany) was virtually destroyed with stamps as it was apparently sold many times in many countries.
