Hello Ken,
It is difficult to tell very much about a revolver with only the serial number and one picture. However, the New Model Army 44 caliber percussion revolver with serial number 91159 was made in August of 1864. It should have a three-line barrel address. If the grips are original to the gun it would mean it was probably a Civilian gun and not delivered to the Ordnance Department as part of one of the four Army Contracts because the original grips would have been made of wood and have an inspectors cartouche on the left one. Are there any letters stamped on the various main parts such as the barrel, frame, cylinder or trigger guard? If there are, these inspection letters could indicate the revolver was originally sold to the Ordnance Department and the grips were changed sometime after the Civil War. It could also mean that the revolver was condemned by the Ordnance Department and then sold to the Trade. Unfortunately there is no information available as to which unit the military revolvers were issued or if civilian where they were shipped.
