Hi,
This is my first post in this forum.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me find some information about my gun, serial number 72279 on the barrel and 72592 on the grip.
On left side there is a stamp with the letters BH.
Kind regards from Sweden

Re: Dating and information on a 1858 New Model Army
Hello,
Your revolver was manufactured in May of 1864. It is a New Model Army, one of 122,000 purchased by the Ordnance Department during the US Civil War. The serial number of your revolver is 72592, which can also be found on the trigger guard tab. The serial number on the barrel of you revolver is different from the frame serial number because the original barrel on your revolver did not pass inspection. The revolvers current barrel was removed from revolver serial number 72279 to be used on a later revolver because the frame on that revolver did not pass inspection. The BH stamped on the left grip is the cartouche of Benjamin Hannis an Armory Sub-inspector who also inspected Allen & Wheelock, Colt Model 1860, Savage “Figure 8” and Starr Revolvers. Once the revolver passed inspection a cartouche was stamped on the grip indicating the revolver was accepted by the Ordnance Department. There are no records of to whom the revolver was issued.
I hope this information is useful.
Bill
