Model 1891 and Model 1901 Target Rolling Block Pistols

Post by bcowern »

Were the Model 1891 And Model 1901 Rolling Block Target Pistols made with frames that were manufactured prior to 1898?

Were any Model 1891 Target pistols produced in 44 S&W or was this chambering only available only in the Model 1901?

Hi,
There were two models of the 1891 Target Pistol Manufactured, the Navy Framed and the Army Framed. According to Jerry Landskron’s book Remington Rolling Block Pistols the Navy Framed Pistol was made in 22 S, 22 LR and 32 S&W CF. The frame on this pistol utilized the same frame as the 1867 Navy Military Pistol and have the military inspector marks P over F.C.W. on the right side so these frames were made before 1898. The Army Framed 1891 pistol was made in 22 S, 22 LR, 25-10 RF, 32 S&W CF, 32 RF and 32-20 WCF and used the same frame as the 50 caliber 1871 Army Military Pistol. These frames were also manufactured prior to 1898. Jerry estimated 100 of the Navy and 700 to 800 of the Army framed pistols were manufactured.
The 1901 Army Framed pistols also used the same frame as the 1871 Army Pistol and were chambered for 44 S&W Russian in addition to 22S, 22 LR, 25-10 RF. Approximately 750 of these were manufactured.

I hope this helps,

Bill,

Thank you for your reply, it most definitely helps. Do you have any reference as to when Remington stopped producing the frames for the Army Pistols?

The contract for 5000 Army Pistols shipped to the Government was completed in February 1872. Jerry states in his book that all frames for the Army pistols were made at the same time and all subsequent Army framed models were the result of production over runs from the Army contract. He added that it took over 30 years to use up the frames on several different models.

"Back in the day", for competition purposes, at what distance(s) would this pistol have been fired at?
