old family pistol

I would like to have more information about this pistol. One of my ancestors bought it in the 1800's before he moved his family from Illinois to Kansas. I can find no name or marks on it on the outside. But familly history says it is a Remmington pistol. Where and how can I find more about it? Pictures are at:

It does say Remington & Sons.Ilton N.Y. U.S.A. on the top of it. Not sure about names of gun parts but might be called the barrell. Under the wood handle (removed screw) in the metal are the numbers 264. I am wiping the gun down with baby wipes to see if I can find any more markings on it.
