1858 new model army revolver

Post by scarekrow »

I'm hoping somebody out there can help me...I have an 1858 new model army revolver cal .44, s/n #91,243.
I am hoping to find a source of information for this particular gun- is there such a source?
In addition, do the letter stamps on the gun have particular significance (an 'H' forward of the trigger housing, a 'D' on the cylinder and barrel)?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Try "Flaydermans Guide To Antique American Firearms" or the "Bluebook Of Gun Values" for a good overview or your Remington. You should be able to find the books in your local library or at most book stores (Barns & Nobles etc.). The small letters you see are most likely government sub inspectors initials who stamped the gun after completion of the part and before the gun was purchased by the ordanance dept. There should also be a cartouche with initials on the left grip just below the grip screw. The cartouche may be hard to see do to wear on the wooden grip.
