Re: 300 savage magazine

Hi Dennis,

You posted this in the post 1898 pistols section. Please re-post in the post 1899 rifle section, so the rifle people will see this, and you may get a response.

Good luck,
Daniel

Re: Remington- Rider ,32 rimfire

Hi Bush Pilot, You have a nice Rider D/A Pocket Pistol. About 20,000 were made from 1859 to about 1873. Yours has the capping cutout, so it was made as a percussion revolver, and later converted to .32 rf short. Remington started making these as cartridge guns about 1869, and offered conversions for...

Re: 1911 A1

Hi RJC, Sorry for the delayed reply, but I usually don't check the post 1899 section. The Remington-Rand is a typewriter company separate from Remington Arms. At one time they were owned by E. Remington & Sons, as was the first typewriter company, but they sold the company in 1887 and it no long...

Re: 1858 NMA - Authenticity question

Vitim Ghaad, Dzień dobry I agree with everything that BillT said. My only question is, does the pistol have a cylinder pin? I don't see one, or at least I don't see the head of the cylinder pin which fits into the cut out area of the loading lever. Has the cylinder pin been replaced? That might be t...

Re: New Model # 45418 Questions.?

Hi Fred,

Both the gun, and the cylinder were made in November, 1863. Obviously, at some point the cylinder was changed, but no way to know when or where. Sorry I'm not any further help. I can't make out the inspector's initials.

Re: Identification deringer model 95?

Hi John, Just to give some clarification on the model number. Before 1921, Remington guns didn't have a model number. In 1922, Remington give all guns a model number. The Double Derringer was just called that before 1922. Double Derringers made in and after 1922 were called the Model 95, but only th...

Re: 1858 NMA -

Hi John, As far as is known, all the guns sent to France were sent directly to France and not routed to another country. What is your source that non-UK made guns have a circle around the proof mark? I have seen US made guns with the standard UK proof marks, but no circle around the proof mark. Ther...

Re: 1863 Remington New Army .44 with grip notches

Hi Fred, First off, those are not notches, which are small cuts into the grip. Those are just scribed lines. I'm not into rifles, so I can't comment on them, but I've never seen marks like this on pistol grips, inside or outside. The stocks are already numbered, and I doubt that any illiterate perso...

Hi sig,

That is very interesting. It makes I wonder if any of the other Pietta repos have parts that are interchangeable with original?

Re: Remington NMA with 1858 & 1863 date?

Hi Old Rem 98, Benjamin Kittredge a Cincy gun shop owner worked out a 3-way deal. Rem would convert NMAs to 46rf, Kittredge would pay $3.26 per gun to S&W, who held the Rollin White, "bored through" patent. S&W kept $1 per gun and sent the rest to Remington. There were 4,540 of the...

Re: Measurements of Remington arms

Hello again Jason, A few comments. 1) the DD measurements are off of one of my original DDs, not a Great Western, and I have no idea what the dimensions of the Great Western DD are. I wondered what the gun in the photo is, now I know. 2) The New Model Police has a 3 1/2" barrel, not a 3" b...

Re: Measurements of Remington arms

Good Morning Jason, Welcome to the RSA forum. First is a clarification of terms. In the DD photo your line A is the height, but your line B is the length. The width is the dimension of the side to side thickness. DD A = 3 1/4" B = 4 7/8" The NMP Your dimensions are: A = 4 1/4" B = 8 1...

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Hi Groucho, The Rollin white patent on a bored through cylinder held up everybody making cartridge revolvers until 1871 and all companies brought out some type of conversions of their percussion guns. Remington did the same, but at that time they were making Rolling Block rifles as fast as possible,...

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

I usually don't disagree with Bill T because his info is always correct, but based on the condition if the Revolver, I find it very hard to believe that your gun was ever issued to anyone. It is possible that the gun was issued to the 1st. MA Cavalry, but that the 1st MA put the gun in storage to be...

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Hi Groucho,

Your serial number was made in December 1863. Even at that time not all guns were issued. There were always a few that were kept in storage for future need. If it wasn't needed it could spend years in storage.

Enjoy your very nice New Model Army,
Daniel
