Re: Remington 760 .243 “semi Auto”
What a strange answer from Remington. There is zero way a 760 receiver can be used to build an auto-loading 742. Not enuff machining for that to be able to happen. What happened is the receiver was roll-marked incorrectly as a 760. I would have liked to seen the box saved for said rifle. That would ...

Re: 760 Gamemaster
First letter is the inspector. Last letter is the builder. You want to focus on the 2 centre "characters" to date your rifle. XT would be December 1970. Serial number lines up for that dating as well.

Should be a 7 digit serial number and your dating is spot on. RHS markings are all you said but for TEST proof

Re: Should I shoot it?
If you don't want to, I will!
That is later ammo-unlikely acquired when the rifle was new.
If in Canada, I will consider purchase.

Re: Remington 700bdl Barrel Stamps
If those are the only characters on the LHS of the barrel, the first U is the stamp of the final inspector and the C is the stamp of the assembler.

Re: Model 788 Carbine stock inlet
Don't quote me directly, but I believe is was 1980 when the stock was revised and the trigger and magwell plate was inletted into the stock, if that is what you are referring to. My resources are hidden away at the moment, but the carbine stock included with the shorter barreled 243,7mm-08, and 308s...

Height changed for the '74 model year. Previous year's 700s and the 720 series share the same receiver dimensions.

Looks to be late late 1976. As a general rule, Custom Shop guns are not date stamped.

Re: Hand checkering vs pressed checkering
None but Custom Shop rifles were hand cut checkered. Impressed checkering was replaced with an awesome method of machine cut that looked like the real thing in 1974 on the 700s.

Re: Model 700 Date of Manufacture
i have a 700 30/06 serial # 310142 under the impression that it was manf. around 1974 but what I have read on this site that must be false . Must be middle to late 60`s. Any thoughts Ed The stock is checkered and it has a cheek piece.I believe it is all original , gun was handed down . Looks to be ...

Re: 788 .243 with Walnut Stock?
The distance between the two screws looks to be about 7 1/4 inches. Sound about right? I was hopin you'd be 1/4 inch the other way! Yours should be 7. 7 is correct for a Extra Long action which is correct for the 6mm, 308 and the later 7mm-08. Well, now I know about a 1st year Extra Long. Thanx
