Re: 7mm Roller
You're correct on most of what you asked, and especially the part about not shooting that newer ammo! But headspace isn't all that simple on a Rolling Block. A case may drop right in, but still have excess headspace. If you chambered a dummy cartridge and then closed the breech block, and lower the ...

Wonder if he's still looking after 6 years?Yellowhouse wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2017 1:48 pm Find a trash magnet like contractors and roofers use. You should be able to cover a lot of ground. A metal detector with a big coil would work too. You're better off finding that bolt. Even if rusted electrolysis can work wonders.

Re: .40 1 7/8 or .40-45 Rem. Straight.
Picked up 100 new .303 British brass, and began the task of opening up necks to .40 caliber, and trimming a good deal off the length. Have a few cases now that drop in the chamber nicely. Will need final fire forming, but they're close enough that I'll load them with a load I think will work, and se...

Re: Remington mold
Haven't cast with it yet Matt, but maybe after hunting season when things slow down here. I'm also very curious about size and weight. I'd guess it will come in around .451"-.452", but weight is tough to guesstimate.

Looks like a #1 1/2 Model to me also. A flat sided #1 octagon top would very rare, and it appears this might be a .22RF, so likely a 1 1/2.

WTB- .40-50SS die set
Looking to see if anyone might have a die set for .40-50Sharps Straight before I plunk down the $150 that C&H4D wants.

Re: .40 1 7/8 or .40-45 Rem. Straight.
Thanks! I did some more searching in my library and found in Rowe's Hepburn book on page 324 that he says they are the same. Remington must have just seated their bullet deeper and got 5 less grains of powder.
Now I need to find dies and some donor .303 British, or .30-40 Krag brass to make cases!

.40 1 7/8 or .40-45 Rem. Straight.
Looking for any information on this old Remington cartridge. Especially rim size and base diameter. Trying to figure out how or if it differs from the .40-50 Sharps Straight? I am picking up a Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifle in .40 1 7/8 (.40-45 Rem. Str.) and hope it might interchange with t...

Re: Slotterbeck Remington?
I agree again. Typical of many sellers that attempt to justify things to enhance their sale. He'd be better off being honest, as he comes off as crooked, or ignorant of Remington Rolling Blocks.

Re: Slotterbeck Remington?
I agree Jim. Definitely not a "standard #1" action as the seller said. But should be plenty strong for the caliber, and a gun I'd love to own. Just too much money in my opinion, although Slotterbeck should definitely bring a premium. Just not sure it's that much premium.

Re: Remington mold
Hard to say if Remington built them at this point Jim. But considering no other gun makers offered a similar mold, I'd say the odds are good that Remington made them. Remington's later molds looked much like those offered by Marlin, BGI, and other companies, which tells me they were later made by BG...

Re: Remington mold
Spent a bit of time this morning and using some scrap steel, I cut out a close shape to what the sprue plate should be. Then filed, sanded, drilled the shape for the sprue plate. After a test fit I polished it up a bit, blued it, and gave it some patina to match the mold blocks. https://i.imgur.com/...

Remington mold
How's this for a cool find? A first variation Remington mold for the .44-77 SBN. It's marked "44 S" on the side, and "25" on top where the sprue plate covers the number. Not sure what "25" means, unless these were serial numbered? Needs a new sprue plate built, but I mi...

Re: Remington RB No 1 Creedmoor
The Remington 44-90 is different from the Sharps and the BN version is 2 7/16 long. But the original was not different than the Sharps, as both rifles shared ammo at the early Creedmoor competition. Back then the cartridge designation was Remington-Sharps, to give both companies that supplied rifle...

Re: Heavy Barrel No. 1 Sporting Rifle
It is indeed a fairly early Sporting Rifle, but late enough to have octagon top, and the later buttplate. Earliest had the round top, and deep crescent buttplate until around 1871 or so.
