Re: Army Conversion with CA marking

Hi Karsten, Can you tell me the serial number and the conversion number on your C.A. marked revolver. The serial number can be found on the bottom barrel flat and on the frame under the left grip. They are most likely the same. The conversion number (up to four digits) will be found on the bottom ba...

Re: Remington conversion

Jeff and Karsten, The C.A. stands for Citizens Association as in the Citizens Association of Chicago. Formed in 1874 after the second Chicago fire by a group of business and professional men to institute the reforms demanded by insurance underwriters for increased fire protection in the city. Recogn...

Re: 1890 revolver

Hello Mike, If your revolver has a short barrel and an 1890 style rib I believe you have a Model 1888. The number 542 is the serial number and the 207 is an assembly number. The barrel address on an 1888 is the same as the 1875 barrel address which is what you revolver has. There are no assembly num...

Re: Family revolver

Hello, I have an idea about your revolver. Could you look on the under side of the barrel and tell us the serial number.

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Remington 1861 Army with a late address

Hello Karu, After thinking about a possible scenario about the origin of your revolver I have some thoughts about it. The frame and grips on your revolver are from an Elliot revolver and were inspected as evidenced by the acceptance marks. The barrel and front sight are from a New Model Army with th...

Re: Help identifying 1858

Hello, Your revolver is a Remington-Ryder Double Action New Model Belt Revolver. Approximately 3000 to 5000 were manufactured from 1863 to 1873. It was manufactured first in percussion like yours and later in metallic cartridge. Many were also converted from percussion to metallic cartridge and will...

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

I have never seen that stamp on any Remington revolver but that does not mean it is not a Remington stamp. I checked one of my percussion revolvers with a mixed numbered barrel and frame and found there is an inspection stamp on each side of the barrel (W,J) and on each side of the frame (C,C) in th...

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

It could be a Whitney conversion he certainly had the expertise to do it, however I doubt he would have worked with Remington on conversions because Remington was trying to keep their employees busy after their revolver contracts dried up after the Civil War. Where on the revolver is the EC located?...

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

Hello Clay, Could you post a picture of each side of the whole gun? I suspect it is a non-Remington conversion and the number 19 is an assembly number. I have seen letters stamped on the frame under the trigger guard on most of the revolvers I have examined and I believe they have something to do wi...

Re: Help identifying New Army revolver

Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner, I have been out of town. From your last picture it looks you have a type 3 Remington factory conversion, which has been further converted to 44 center fire. The initial six shot 44 percussion revolver was converted by Remington to a five shot 46 rim fire r...

Re: Remington New Army

Hi Kelly, Your revolver was manufactured in October of 1864. It was shipped to the Ordnance Department that month but unfortunately there are no records by serial number of if and to whom it was issued. From the condition of the revolver it probably did see some action. It looks like the grips have ...

Re: Help identifying New Army revolver

Hello, Your revolver was manufactured as a 44 caliber percussion revolver in December of 1864. Unfortunately there are no records as to which unit or soldier the revolvers were issued. Can you tell us the three digit number on the frame? It looks like 406 to me. Are there any other numbers on the ba...

It's on the tab that allows the gate to pivot. You will probably only see a couple of numbers because you have a five digit serial number.

Re: Remington 1875 - No barrel address

Hi Peter, Good luck on finding any 44 Remington cartridges. The last one I got took five years to find it and cost $65. There should not be a serial number on the under side of the barrel. The 1875 should have the serial number on the frame under the left grip, on the trigger guard tab and on the lo...
