Re: NMA 45 Colt conversion Frank L. Osgood

Hello Eskil, I have an Osgood conversion in 45 caliber like yours. Mine has a modified hammer and long firing pin similar to yours. The information below is from Roger Phillips’ book (pg 85) where he writes about the Osgood conversions. "The Fig. 93 five shot revolver is noteworthy for several ...

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Leo, That c mark on the left side of the frame is just anouther inspection stamp. The "C" mark Don Ware talks about in his book is much larger than an inspectors mark. Shown below is a picture from Don's book on page 27. Compare the size of the condemned "C" with the size of the ...

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Hello Leo, Are you talking about the small “C” on the left frame above the hammer screw in picture number five? As far as the cartouche goes, if it is RPB, Don stated that the RPB cartouche has been incorrectly identified as Robert P Berry. He goes on the say this unknown individual also inspected R...

Re: Mystery Remington Keene carbine

Hi, I previously owned a Remington-Keene carbine with a 20 inch barrel. On page 71 of Roy Marcot’s book, Remington America’s Oldest Gunmaker, he lists the Remington-Keene models being the same as in Flayderman’s with the exception of the carbine which Roy lists as having a 20 inch barrel as compared...

Re: 1858 Navy Revolver

Hi Bill, From the picture and updated information in your last post you have a single action Belt revolver. It was also made in.36 caliber but had a six and one half inch barrel rather than the seven and three eighth inch barrel the Navy revolver has. It is a scaled down version of the Navy revolver...

Re: 1858 Navy Revolver

Hi Bill, Remington produced three Navy (.36caliber) size revolvers during the Civil War just like they produced three Army (.44 caliber) size revolvers. They are in the order manufactured, the Beals, the Elliot or “Old Model” and the New Model. The serial numbers started with the Beals and continued...

Re: Bird's head 1875 prototype

Hi Merrill, The 1875 prototype revolver with the bird’s head grip is a replica. If you Google “Remington Bird’s Head 1875 Revolver” and go to the images, there is the same picture with a statement under it saying it is a Remington 1875 Replica – Airgun Hobbyist Magazine. The other 1875 revolver with...

Re: Remington 1875

Hello James, In Don Ware’s article “Variations in Model 1875, Model 1888 and Model 1890 Revolvers” he states “Poor sales evidently prompted Remington to offer the revolver in the more popular .44-40 WCF and .45 Government calibers. The .45 Caliber revolver will accept either the .45 Colt or the .45 ...

Hello Niklas,
Serial Number 34970 would have been manufactured in September of 1863.

Re: Was there ever...1871 Army Rimfire?

According to Jerry Landskron’s book “Remington Rolling Block Pistols” the 1971 Army revolver was made in 50 caliber centerfire. There were however some target models (1887, 1891 and 1901) which used the 1871 Army frame and were offered in the smaller rimfire calibers (22 S, 22LR, 25-10 and 32).

Re: New to me, NMA, SN date request

Hi Niklas, If your serial number is 84970 your revolver was manufactured in July of 1864. Did you check under the left grip to see if the number on the frame matches the number on the barrel? Your revolver seems to have a cone front sight which is dovetailed into the barrel. These front sights are u...

Re: Remington 1875 - Need help to rate finish

Hello Maxi, If you revolver is indeed a 44 Remington caliber then the barrel has been cut. All of the 44 Remington caliber 1875 revolvers were originally manufactured with long barrels, pinched front sights and lanyard rings. What is the serial number of your revolver? Also does it have a flat top h...

Re: Yet another New Model 1858 question

Hello, Your pistol is an Elliot or Old Model Revolver. It was made in August of 1864. The first Navy caliber revolvers made by Remington were the Beals Model. There were approximately fifteen thousand made. These were followed by the Elliot or Old Model of which approximately five thousand were manu...

Re: Remington 1858 information.

I contacted an associate who has a database of serial numbers of percussion revolvers of all makes and models. He has six other Remington New Model Armies with Mexican markings so yours is not the only one. As far as the mixed numbers go there is not the stigma attached to Remington revolvers having...

In Don Ware’s article “Variations in Remington Model 1875 Model 1888 and Model 1890 Revolvers” in the First Quarter 2001 Remington Journal photo #7 insert shows the Mexican Liberty Cap with an “R” and “M” under it just like the one stamped on the frame of your new Model Army shown in your second pic...
