Re: New member due to latest acquisition needing ID help.

Hi There, It is possible that you have a NYS rolling block. If it is, it should have the special safety feature that drops the hammer to half-cock when the breech block is closed. The NYS rolling blocks were made in 50-70 caliber. A very few were purchased by the city of Buffalo and they were in 45-...

Re: Identify? Rolling Block

Hi There, The closest I can come up with is Costa Rica. They would put a serial number on the right-hand side of the frame. The only example I have seen has the serial number between the front (breach block) pivot pin and the front of the frame and stamped right-side-up. Yours has the serial number ...

Re: Identify? Rolling Block

Hi There, What you have is a "Spanish model" rolling block. These were chambered in .43 Spanish (which is very close to the 44-77 Sharps bottle neck cartridge). The numbers on the sides of the tangs are not serial numbers but more like lot numbers. Remington manufactured rifles in lots. Ea...

Re: trying to identify my rolling block

Hi There, I've been away for a month doing work and haven't seen this post before. Yes, that is a New York State model (as you have rightly surmised). The letter "S" on the left hand side of the frame is a giveaway. The safety locking action on these are the only ones Remington made (the S...

Re: Argentine R/B 'lateral' extractor?

Hi There, Welcome to the Group! I'm a little confused by the wording of your post. First off, let me make sure that I know what model of Rolling Block you have. Does your rifle have the octagon section of barrel over the chamber area (sometimes referred to as a knocksform) stamped with "Modelo ...

20 ga. with "Transform" frame

Hi There,

I noticed a Remington rolling block for sale and the
lower tang has the extra wood screw like the "Transform"
rifles used. I don't remember seeing this feature on
a rolling block shotgun before. Any body else know
anything about this?

Cheers!

Re: RRB Butt Stock Repair

Hi There,

Wow. That is quite a butchered job. Any repair would be quite
unsightly. I would just replace it at this point.

Good Luck!

Re: Rolling Block Chambering Assistance

Hi There, Now if I could only find some cartridges ..... everybody seems sold out with cartridges on back order and an unknown supply date. If you can reload, you can get brass from 'track of the wolf.' https://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/233/1 They are expensive at $3.99 each but it is go...

Re: Rolling Block Chambering Assistance

Hi There,

Your chamber dimensions are consistent with 43 Spanish.
From the tang markings, it sounds like a fourth type frame
Flat sided.

To be absolutely sure it is a No. 1, measure the thickness of
the frame. It should be somewhere around 1.320" +/- .010"

Good Luck!

Re: New to Rolling Blocks - Where could I read up on the history of this one?

Hi There, What you have is a typical #1 size rolling block military rifle. There were over a million of these made for different countries all over the world. This rifle has what is called in the collector field, a type 4 action (the last type). Without more detail of the caliber, sights and any spe...

Tang Numbers, When did Remington Start?

Hi There, I recently received a Remington made Dainish M1867 contract rolling block and when I removed the butt stock, there weren't any tang numbers on the left side of the tangs. I never have seen a military Remington Rolling Block without them before. After some cleaning, I did find them but they...

Re: Rolling Block identification help

Hi There,

Your chamber measurements are consistent with the
same measurements of my chambers of the two rifles
I have in .43 Spanish.

Good Luck!

Re: Need help identifying this rolling block..

Hi There, Are you asking for help with Identification of your No. 5? It would have been best if you started a new thread rather than piggy-backing off an older thread. Regardless, we will try and help. There are several versions of the No. 5 rolling block. It first made its appearance in 1896. The f...

Re: R.B. CARBINE.

Hi There, From what I have read, 50-45 can be made from 50-70 brass and trimming it back to the correct length. Being a black powder load, the charge would be whatever the case can hold in black powder (minus the space required for the bullet). Most say to make the charge sightly longer than that (s...
