Re: Chamber length on Model 1885 10-gauge
Thanks, that supports my measurement of 2 5/8" chambers.

Chamber length on Model 1885 10-gauge
Anyone know what was the 'standard' length of the chambers on a 10-gauge Remington Model 1885 double? I have a grade 2 gun with twist barrels but no 10-gauge chamber gauge. Using a narrow machinist's rule it appears to be 2 5/8" or maybe 2 3/4" but it's a little hard to measure. Thanks for...

Re: 26" Barrel on Model 1900?
Does the pellet count stamped on the lug agree with the drop-in guage? Maybe. The pellet count for the right barrel is (or was) 50 but it has been maked out with two Xs. The number for the left barrel is either 86 or 98 depending on how you look at it. If that means 386 or 398 it would be between 7...

Re: 26" Barrel on Model 1900?
Again, thank you Researcher and 2shooter for your replies. Here's the follow-up on the gun I mentioned in my first post: I decided to buy the gun with the 26" barrels. The gun is serial #3458xx, made in 1904. I don't believe the barrels were cut, they touch at the muzzle and my drop-in gauge in...

Re: 26" Barrel on Model 1900?
Thanks, 2shooter. That's interesting, an early (1901?) gun with a 26" barrel. I wonder if that barrel came with the gun when it was new or if it was made at the Remington factory later at a customer's request. The 201 and 289 pellet count (39% and 57%) would seem to be appropriate for a shorter...

Re: 26" Barrel on Model 1900?
Researcher, thanks, I missed that hang tag - but it's right there on page 260. So I guess the answer to my question is yes, the 1900 was made with 26" steel barrels although probably not until well into the gun's production history. But here is evidence that by early 1908 the shorter barrels we...

26" Barrel on Model 1900?
Charles Semmer's book on Remington doubles references the 1901 catalog and says the 1900 was available in barrel lengths of 28, 30 and 32 inches. I have a reprint of the 1909 catalog that shows barrel lengths of 26, 28, 30 and 32 available. I recently saw a 1900 for sale with 26" barrels and wo...

Re: Sportsman 48 Restoration
Sounds like you will be spending more than the gun would be worth after all the work is done. The 48s are nice guns (have two of them), but good problem-free examples can usually be bought for a very reasonable amount. I think I paid about $325 a few years ago for the last one I bought. Having said ...

Brass Shot Shell Question
Not a shotgun question, but a Remington shotgun shell question: I have several old 2-1/2" all-brass 12 gauge shot shells marked "REM-UMC" and "BEST." They use a large pistol primer.
Can anyone tell during what period of time these were made?

Re: Barrel Lengths of Model 1889 Hammer Guns
From what I recall, the '89 off the shelf was only offered in grades 1 through 3. Grades 4 through 7 were all special order so barrel length would be part of the customer's choice. Yes, that's my understanding as well, off-the-shelf guns were grades 1 (decarbonized steel barrels), 2 (twist barrels)...

Barrel Lengths of Model 1889 Hammer Guns
I know Model 1889s were made with 30" and 32" barrels, but were 28" barrels also standard length for the lower grade guns?

Model 1900 Forend Latch Spring
I have a feeling this is a part that is often broken on these old double guns. Wisner's http://www.wisnersinc.com/ has them for $25 plus $7 shipping. Their catalogue says it is for the extractor model, but they will fit the ejector guns as well. It was a smidge too wide and I had to dress it down wi...

How many 16 gauge Model 1900s?
There were about 98,500 Remington Model 1900 double guns made between 1900 and 1910. Most I have seen are 12 gauge although there are some 16 gauge guns around. Does anyone have an idea how many?

Re: Model 1889 Article
Interesting data on the prices Researcher, I wonder if Mr. Semmer was mistaken with those 1892 catalog prices. My 1908 Sears catalog also lists the Grade 3 at $25.00. Okay, so I can believe the Grade 1 was sold for $20.00, but I still wonder about that $14.95 price mentioned in the article. I missed...
