Re: Newly inherited 1875

Hi Ian, Thanks for the additional pictures. The lack of matching assembly numbers on the ejector housing and the bottom of the barrel and the round firing pin hole lead me to believe this revolver was not re-chambered. With a ratchet measurement of .517 and a round top hammer with a cone firing pin ...

Re: Newly inherited 1875

Hello Ian, You have a revolver which as you have noticed has features of the early 44 Remington caliber and later 44-40 and 45 caliber revolvers. The 1761 number is either the serial or the batch number. The batch number is usually thought to be three digits but in my research I have found batches w...

Hi Tom,
According to the serial number list in Don Ware's book your revolver was manufactured in December of 1864.

Re: 1858 New Model Army - Serial Number Tracking info?

Hello Pat, You are correct about the date your revolver was manufactured, July 1864. I know that Don Ware in his book “Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861- 1888” identified the GP cartouche as that of Giles Porter. However, in a book published in 2016 “U.S. Military Arms Inspector Marks” by Daum ...

Re: Remington New Model Army

Hi Virgil, That is a nice piece of history you have there. You are correct it was made in April of 1863. It looks like the cartouche may be that of George Palmer. If you go to the Soldiers and Sailors database at the National Parks service and look up Micajah Wilkinson under Confederates from Missis...

Re: New Model Army, real deal?

Hi, Your revolver was made in August of 1864. Having a revolver with mixed serial numbers is not very common but it does happen. I have data on approximately sixty New Model Army revolvers with mixed numbers. The reason for this is the inspection process and Remington’s policy of never throwing anyt...

Re: Remington Navy Elliot's patent

I do not have a source for parts. However if you go to the Remington Society Home page and click on Service/Parts there are several parts dealers listed. I do not know if they have any parts for Navy percussion revolvers. You also might want to pick up a copy of Don Ware’s book, Remington Army and N...

Re: Remington Navy Elliot's patent

Hello, You are correct that the “J” stampings had something to do with military inspectors. Once the revolver was completed by the manufacturer the military inspectors inspected the major components of the revolver and placed their stamp on the parts which passed inspection. Once a revolver passed i...

Re: remington keene bolt action magazine carbine

Hi, There is an eight page article “The Indian Police Remingtons Part I” by Don Ware and Slim Kohler in the November 1992 Gun Report Magazine. In it they said there were at least four but possible five orders of 160 rifles bringing the total to 800 rifles. They also said they believed the Indian Pol...

Re: picture test

I have never seen an 1875 with the batch number stamped on the bottom of the grips. Since the font size is a different from the batch number stamping on the frame I suspect it was put there by the owner in order to be able to easily identify an individual revolver without having to remove the grips....

Re: 1875 Remington cylinder pin removal

The original run of 44 Remington caliber revolvers went from 1 to about 16000. These were all chambered in 44 Remington caliber. The highest serial number I have is 15294 but I believe I read somewhere that there was a revolver with a serial number 15820. The next run of approximately 2000 revolvers...

Re: model 1875 revolver

Hi, You are most likely correct that the 280 is a batch number. However, it could also be a revolver from the second serial number set or it could be an original 44 Remington caliber revolver which was re-chambered to 44-40. It is unlikely it is a re-chambered revolver because normally there would b...

Re: Remington 1875 when manufactured and Bone grips

Hi John, I think you are pretty close on your estimate of the manufacturing date. I think between 1878 when Remington started manufacturing 1875’s in 44-40 and 45 caliber and 1879 depending on when Remington changed the caliber mark from the grip to the frame. You are most likely correct on your gue...

Hello, By the serial number on your revolver I believe you have a Beals Navy revolver. The Beals Navy is a 36 caliber percussion revolver and was the first of the larger caliber revolvers to be manufactured by Remington. Your particular revolver was made in December of 1861 so I would say there is a...
