Re: Tulsa GS find 1867 Navy carbine ???s

Perhaps I am laboring under a misapprehension - is the Navy carbine rare, or even particularly scarce? Maybe some of the ads I see (but do not research) are not proper specimens?

Since I only collect the Springfield-made RBs, I have never tried to acquire one of those carbines.

Re: Tulsa GS find 1867 Navy carbine ???s

Sounds like a good find - congratulations! Perhaps now you can find some rusted-out POS with a decent stock.

I'm still looking for an 1870 Trials carbine, in 50-55, to come out of the woodwork (couldn't afford one from a dealer).

Re: Photos of NYS Rolling block after cleaning.

Well, I don't know - I hate to be a wet blanket, and yes, I also try to remove any loose red stuff, but I think that turned out to be a "rub too far". I truly hate to say that because great care was obviously taken in the planning and the process, but I'd have skipped the Simichrome for su...

Re: Help!! NYSRB Reassembly

Amen as to leaving that design alone! About the best thing that can be said is that everything at least appears to be 'captured' (so long as nothing is broken, of course!). What causes trouble is those cases when disassembly allows a loose piece to detach, and you have no idea where it came from. I'...

Re: Help!! NYSRB Reassembly

I was going to suggest "Single Shot Rifles and Actions" by the late Frank DeHaas, but, at least at a quick glance, it does not seem to cover the "locking" action. I'm sure that particular mechanism has some additional parts, almost certainly to include at least one extra spring, ...

Re: More photos of #2 NYS RB.

Kinda walking the tightrope here - I am by no means a "finish expert." I do try NOT to acquire buffed (or Naval Jellied for that matter) guns. Please do not take that as being snobbish - as I have NO problem at all with light period rust or unpolished pitting. I'm not a "mint" co...

Re: More photos of #2 NYS RB.

Sadly, it also appears to have spent quite a bit of hard time on a wire wheel, and/or a buffing wheel, somewhere in the refinishing process.

Re: New York contract rifle unknown caliber

What is the "Buffalo Regiment"? If you mean the 10th Cavalry, they would have had Springfields.

Re: NYS Rolling Blocks ?s on "Tinned" finish New PHOTOS ADDE

Looks to me like the well-weathered remains of an original "in the white" (in Springfield terms, "National Armory Bright") finish. In other words, I see nothing remarkable. That said, pictures are only pictures, and there can be nuances which are only visible by actually handling...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block

Nuts...one more inconsistency I just caught....the screw head as on your barrel band is also on left side of mine as well... meaning that they stamped the U at random on either side. All these years I never really took note of this simple feature, but I suppose it was a fact of life of mass product...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block

Wouldn't it depend on which way round you you fitted it? :? It would IF you didn't care which way the "U" pointed - but - the open end of the "U" was supposed to face the muzzle, in all cases. Therefore, the bands are "handed", to use an old builder's hardware term. An...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block

I thought that the "U" was SUPPOSED to be on the LEFT side (when used at all) for Remington-made bands?

It is for the Remington-Lee, at least.

The right-side "U" was a Springfield feature, which certainly WAS used on the several martial RB models made there.
