Re: 1871 new york militia rolling block????

Very nice rifle! I hate to keep bringing this up, but the locking-action hammer does NOT "drop to half-cock". It IS released so as to bear against, and drag on, the block, requiring the hammer to be re-cocked before shooting, but it does not fall into the half-cock notch. The EFFECT is bas...

Re: New Guy and SURPRISE! I have a "ID my RB" question

Aha, now that we can FINALLY see the whole thing, the crystal ball clears a bit. I wondered why the tip fit so poorly. It is because the rifle was cut down, at some time, by "Bubba", who also left his trademark goofy front sight and wrench/vise marks on the barrel. The NYS arms were either...

Re: Request info on 1899 Rem Lee Sporter

Thanks, Gene!

Wish I'd known that before I parted with the gun - but it went in part of the cash/trade deal which brought me my "Type 2" (Sharps-sighted) Springfield Long Range rifle in .45-80, one of the seven known of the 24 produced in 1881, so I really cannot squawk too much.

Re: Request info on 1899 Rem Lee Sporter

I used to have a similar (less ornate) rifle, marked ".236" on the bottom of the barrel, just ahead of the forend. I was never sure of the caliber as there are three possibilities: 6m/m Navy rimmed, 6m/m Navy rimless, and .236 Remington. The latter is a VERY rare rimmed cartridge, shorter ...

Re: Trying to reconstruct a 1870 Springfield Trials Carbine

Ed, I do not think so (though I'm sure that what you stated also occurred). While, at the time, I was basically "aware" of the four Trials carbines, I did not know just how rare the Remingtons and Sharps versions were/are, but I particularly recall wording to the effect that what they were...

Re: Trying to reconstruct a 1870 Springfield Trials Carbine

WAAAAY back in the day (1980s?) someone, quite possibly S&S, advertised the proper forends. Don't know how many they had but it cannot have been a hot mover - maybe they still have one or two in some nook or cranny? On a similar front, I'm working VERY slowly on one of the 28" barrel M1882 ...

Re: Trying to reconstruct a 1870 Springfield Trials Carbine

The bar LOOKS to be about the same length as that on the Allin and Ward-Burton carbines made at the same time, though the front attachment would be different of course. Since what you are making isn't going to be "right" anyhow, such a bar might give you a good starting point. Such bars (i...

Re: Help ID’ing an old rolling block

Agrees with mine - note relationship of barrel, rod, and forend - this is not what presents on the 'mystery' piece. Also, not the same arm as described in the SA link (which is the common M1871) provided by OP. So, I think we now what it isn't - though whether we'll ever know exactly how it came to ...

Re: Help ID’ing an old rolling block

I believe you will find that the correct barrel length for the Trials rifle is 36", and that the statement made about the 1008 rifles completed makes an error in that regard. The Trials rifle was sort of a "missing link" between the Navies and the later M1871, which had an entirely di...

Re: Help ID’ing an old rolling block

It's fun trying to unravel these little mysteries! I will not be able to measure my own guns for awhile, though I do own specimens of both Navies and the Trials arm. Without getting into specifics it would appear that you have a Trials receiver fitted with a Navy barrel - and then some sort of "...

Re: Help ID’ing an old rolling block

My guns are not readily accessible at present, but I believe the hammer is (also) the same between the Navies and the Trials rifles. Barrel length, forend length, rod length, and right-side receiver markings are the determining factors. The hammer and block are both distinctly different on the 1871 ...

Re: Help ID’ing an old rolling block

I cannot place my finger on exactly why or what, but there is something "wrong" about the first picture (of the muzzle area). The rod (whose front end dimensions never changed) looks "right", and the rifle (exposed stock wood dimension) proportions look "right", but the...

Re: Hybird Carbine?

Well, thankfully it is just a bunch of parts - as I first skimmed through the post quickly I was dreading seeing that someone HAD messed up an 1870 Trials carbine. That would have been a REAL tragedy since they are SO scarce. I have managed to acquire six of the eight pieces in the 1870 "set&qu...
