Re: I have an 1858 -- What can you tell me?

PS - Price range Hi Phil, We don't give any estimates unless we have the gun in hand. Everybody has their own definition of words like, "poor," "pretty good," "good," "great," and "excellent." So there is really no way to give a fair estimate without...

Re: I have an 1858 -- What can you tell me?

Hi Phil, Yes, it can be a New Model, without those words on the bbl. Remington never wasted anything, and your serial is close to when the NMAs started being made. It is very possible that a Beals Model bbl was still in a parts bin and was put on a NMA frame. Also, the first ?? number New Models mad...

Hi Palomar9,

You have an early, New Model Army, made in March of 1863. The grips have been replaced, and it may have been re-blued. We can't give any value without having the gun in hand because there are so many variables.

Re: Help needed with authenticating New Model 1858 .36 Navy

Hi Richard, Congrats on your first Remington. The only thing that I can add to what has already been said, is a guess on the "second" serial. This is just a guess, but it is possible that the repair to the frame was done in a country that requires damaged serial numbers to be replaced, and...

Re: Remington 1858 History

Hello Keith,

Here is a real long shot. Remington revolvers were sold to France by both Remington, and third party agents, for the Franco-Prussian War. For some reason, the French stripped the finish off of most of the pistols they acquired.

Re: Forum activity

hello forum viewers, How is this for a late reply? I can give a short reply on the factory info for handguns. there isn't any! How's that for short and sweet? What happened is that E Remington & Sons had lots of records stored in a storage facility in NYC. ER&S went bankrupt and was sold in ...

Re: Help! - Remington 1858 .44

Hi USNA85, It's impossible to tell from just one photo. To even have any idea would take several, good quality photos. The first thought is that no engraved, embellished Remmy would have plain wood grips. The front sight appears to be the pinched type, which wouldn't be on an early NMA. If the gun i...

Re: 1858 NMA date of mfg. question

Hi Chuck, Your gun, 6252x was made in March of 1864. There are no books specifically about the manufacture and assembly of Remington products. A few books briefly touch on this, but the "Bible" of Large Frame Revolvers is: "Remington Army - Navy Revolvers, 1861-1888" by Don Ware....

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Hi Leo, Thanks for all the additional photos. Yes, Rem often just put the last 5 digits on the trigger guard tab. Looking at the cartouche, and based only on the first letter, I agree that the first letter is a P or a R. According to Ware's book, the only inspector who fits this is Robert P Barry. W...

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Hello,

Is that a lanyard ring stud on the butt? If so, it was added after it left the factory. Maybe at that time, some parts were replaced.

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Hi Again Lawyer,

I forgot to ask, do all 3 serial numbers match? If not, it may have been assembled from various parts. It has been 157 years since your pistol was made, and a lot could have happened to it over those Years.

Re: C stamp on the 1858 revolver

Hi Lawyer095, Per Don Ware's book on large frame revolvers: The letter "C" on a part indicates a the part was condemned. The gun was returned to the assembly room, bad parts replaced, and then resubmitted for inspection. Rem made 150,000 Army revolvers, with 116,00 accepted, so there are 3...

Re: Remington NMA case measures

Hello Fabrizio, There is no known, standard size case for any Remington pistol. Remington had their cases made for them, and the cases can vary in dimensions depending on the contents and the way they are laid out. For all we know, the case makers of the time may have made case of a certain size, an...

Re: M1899 Remington-Lee: Throating for 6mm USN ctg?

Hi Rob, Maybe a manufacturer has the drawings that you want. There may not be a specific throat design, or length since each maker will determine what length throat they want in their barrels. They may only have the dimensions of the cartridge. Maybe a barrel maker will have the throat dimensions th...

Re: Remington New Model Army date of manufacturing

Hello again Frabrizio, The “GP” on the grip is for Giles Porter. Here’s what Don ware said in his book; "Giles Porter, principal sub-inspector. Porter seems to have served at Remington on more than one tour of duty during the war, as the serial number range of the revolvers bearing his cartouch...
