Re: Help identifying 1858

Here’s a little more info on the Belt Models. They were made from 1863 to 1886, first as percussion models, and starting in 1873, as cartridge models. Remington catalogs called both the SA, and the DA, “Belt Revolvers.” Some modern collectors call the DA pistols, “Rider Model” or “Ryder Belt Models,...

Re: Remington 1861 Army with a late address

Hi Karu, Another possibility is that as the gun traveled through the years, the bbl was damaged, and a replacement was found and installed. Even today individual parts can be found for the Beals, the Elliot, and the NMA. Mismatched numbers would not raise any questions after the replacement, except ...

Re: Please Help identify this revolver, better photos posted

Hi Old Photo,

Is the ivory stocked gun in the other pic an Army or Navy? It is a New Model, but the bbl has been cut. Do you know anything about that gun?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Something bothers me on my Remington Belt model

Hi Patbar,

Here's a PS. The serial number will be on the underside of the barrel, the lower, left grip frame, and the tab on the trigger guard.

Re: Something bothers me on my Remington Belt model

Hi Patbar, First, there were just over 10,000 Belt Models made between 1863 and 1886. From an on going survey, the SAs appear to be about 40% of the total. The hammer serrations are very unusual on Remingtons, but not unheard of. Belts were made as both percussion, and later as cartridge versions. W...

Re: Remington Model 1875 & 1890 references

Hi Orpington, Unfortunately, not really. There have been some articles written about them, and they are mentioned in a few books, but no books on them. There are a couple of RSA members researching the 75s, and a couple researching the 88s. I am compiling a serial list of the 90s, but not doing any ...

Re: Remington New Model Army

Hi, Just saw this in the rifle section. Webb is right. First relist this in the pistol section. Then post in the WTB section of the want ads here. You might also post an ad in the want ads of the RSA magazine. Your gun was made in early, Feb. 1864. It is one of 148,550 NMAs made so the odds of findi...

Re: Dating my 1858 Remington Navy

Hi Obi,

Your gun was one of the first made in Jan. of 1864. The letters on the gun are inspector's marks, so your gun was a US Government purchase. Unless there is an entry in the Springfield Research files, there is no way to know when or to who it was issued. The cut bbl hurts any value.

Re: remington m95 parts

Hi SAP 45-70, You might have better luck looking for parts for the Double Derringer. The model 95 designation for the Double Derringer started in 1922, and many, if not most people don't know the model 95. You'll also most likely find parts under the Double Derringer heading and may find parts at Di...

Re: Remington 1875 information

Hi Jr 47, Does the number on the tab of the trigger guard match the frame? There should also be a number on the tab of the loading gate. There were about 25K to 30K model 75s made. They were made from 1875 to 1886. The first 16k were sequentially numbered, but after that batch numbers were used. Eac...

Re: Information about a handgun, please

Hi Mike, Yes, it’s a New Model Pocket revolver. It should be in 32 rim fire. Based on the serial number, you are probably right, that it was made as a cartridge revolver, probably in the 1872-75 era. Cartridges were made for Navy arms about 40 years ago and some are still available. Pricey, but they...

Re: New Model 1858 Different S/N

Hi Dauphin, Welcome to the RSA site. The serials were both made in Jan., 1865. My guess is that the bbl was damaged and replaced, but you would think if that were the case, that the frame number would be lower than the bbl number. It is also possible that the frame failed inspection, and it was scra...

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

Hi Nodakr,

You might try Buffalo Arms for BP loads. Slug the bore, and measure the cylinder length to get the OAL of the cartridge, and go from there. The original factory conversions were in 44 Colt, so a cut down 44 spec case should work.
Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

Hi Clay, While we wait for Bill's expertise, I can help with the numbers. Both numbers were made in May of 1863. It is possible that for some reason the bbl failed inspection, and another bbl was screwed into the frame. That's just a guess. What is the number on the trigger guard tab? If it matches ...

Re: Help identifying New Army revolver

An idea for your shadow box would be to find a cartridge for the gun and make it part of the display. If you want to make it inert, just drill a small hole into the side of the case. dump the powder and squirt WD-40 into the case. That will kill the primer, and any residual powder. Once finished, po...
