David, I urge you to reconsider the sit back and hold your opinion comment. If you had not offered your opinion, my comment would not have seen the light of day, and others are sure to benefit from our discussion. Don Ware was a personal friend of mine who allowed me to make many comments and opinio...

Re: Is it a Remington?

The owner describes the revolver as looking like an 1861, having a 6.5" barrel while New Model Army revolvers are of the 1858 design, and have an 8" barrel. None of the Remington revolvers had serial numbers like G1G64. Now if that serial number was actually 61664, and the caliber was .44,...

Re: Hello and could you help me date my Remington?

The OWA cartouche is attributed to O. W, Ainsworth. A Principal Sub-Inspector. The other smaller single letter markings are typically attributed to unidentified in-process insepectors. I do not have a record of unit distribution.

Re: Engraved 870 Help needed

Daniel, Another point of question concerning the stock. Your stock doesn't seem to match the photo's I have of the factory Trap stock and it does have the black cap at the grip, but it doesn't fit the description of the Skeet Special stock either. If it has the recoil pad, and a 28" or 30"...

Re: Engraved 870 Help needed

Daniel, I am in agreement with the Remington Factory, that your Model 870, S/N 19439V was manufactured in 1950, and the suffix "V" indicates that it is a 12 ga. With a serial number range for the 12 ga Model 870 in 1950 encompassing serial numbers 1 - 42423, your shotgun falls within the f...

Re: Date and possible service history of my New Army 1858.

All of the cartouche associated with Remington firearms during the civil War were either 2 or 3 characters within a rectangular or oval border. There is a two digit cartouche in your serial number range, GP Giles Porter. APrincipal Sub-Inspector. Porter seems to have served at Remington on more than...

Re: manufacture dates

Your revolver NMA sn 47074 shows a manufacturing date of October 1863. Data is extracted from "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888 " by Don Ware.
