Re: HELP !! New 1858 Find

Nope, never saw that marking before. The only markings that I've seen stamped into a Rem grip were done after it left the factory.

Re: HELP !! New 1858 Find

Hi Nodakr, Your gun was made in Dec 1864, and the letters are sub-Inspector's marks. meaning the gun was bought by the government. The CGC cartouche was C.G. Curtis, but he inspected in the early part of the war, 1862, which doesn't match with the Dec 1864. manufactured date, so the grips could be r...

Re: Remington New Model 1858 information

Hi Chief,

Your gun was made in Nov of 1863. There is no way to know who used it whether military or civilian, or any history on the gun. No value can be given without personal inspection, just too many variables.

Re: Remington New Model 1858 information

Hi Santa,

Your gun was made in either Dec of 1862, or Jan of 1863. Give us the full serial and I can tell you which one.

Re: Snap caps for 35 Remington?

Hi Sanforth,

I like the idea of the epoxy resin, but will it have enough resistance to prevent firing pin damage? I don't know. Maybe an expert will jump in and let us know. A hard rubber plug made from hardware stock does offer enough resistance, and only requires one additional step.

Re: Snap caps for 35 Remington?

Hi Jim, Are you looking for dummy rounds, or for dry firing rounds? Dummy rounds are easy. Drill a small hole in the side of the case, dump the powder, and squirt WD through the hole and into the primer to kill it. Check it by firing the gun to ensue the primer is dead. If you reload, just leave the...

If I had a bone-headed move, IF, I sure wouldn't post it in a public forum, unless I was looking for help, like the OP.

Re: NEED HELP, Identify 1858 New Army Conversion

Hi Nodakr, First you need to determine the caliber. Slug the bore with a soft lead round ball or slug to get the bore dimensions. Then you can make a cast of the chamber and get the case dimensions from that. Or take the cylinder to a gun or cartridge show and actually insert various rounds into the...

Re: Army Conversion with CA marking

Hi again Karsten,

I'm slow on the draw today. Bill T already answered this in the post, "Remington Conversion." I was wrong on the A, as Bill said, it stands for Association.

Re: Army Conversion with CA marking

Hi Karsten, Bill T is the expert on these CA marked guns. He had an article in the RSA Journal a few years ago about these guns. The short version is that they belonged to the "Citizens Authority" of Chicago. They purchased rifles and pistols to hold in reserve, to give to the Chicago Poli...

Re: Remington 1861 Army with a late address

Hi Karu,

The process was established by the Ordnance Dept., so the inspectors would follow the same procedure for all manufactures. The inspectors may vary, but the procedures are the same.

Re: Remington Beals 36 cal revolver Research

Hi Orent, If you post a picture or two, we can better identify the gun you have. The serial number will determine the made date. There are basically just two models of the Beals revolver. The first model has only one finger grip on the cylinder pin. Only 200 were made. Because of the single finger g...

Re: 1890 revolver

Hi Inh98, Can you please post some pic of the gun? To add to Bill T's excellent info, the RSA's two leading researchers on the 1888 estimate that less than 350 of them were made. This is mainly based on the assembly numbers, which were sequential, and not batch numbers which the serial numbers may t...

Re: Remington 1861 Army with a late address

Hi Patbar, Without any inspectors' marks, your Navy has to be a civilian model, thus there is no way to know when it was sold, or who it was sold to. Even in the middle of war, guns were made for the civilian market. It's interesting that you gun was made in March of 63, but has the Old Model bbl an...

Re: Affordable, shooter grade Model 51s?

Hi Dave, The model 51s are out there, and they show up all over the place, but you probably won't find another one for $350. Maybe $500. If the 350 gun is still there and in decent shape, you might reconsider getting it. Check the gun shows and the guns shops and pawn shops. The frame and slide will...
