Re: Dating My 1894 sxs Damascus Shotgun serial 102257?

Terry - could you expand on the rarity of the 12 Ga. small frame? I have a 1900 KED with a small action body made in 1910.

Re: Cleaning / restoration tips

First -- welcome! Cleaning the metal parts is fairly straight forward. For light soil and buildup I usually use a fairly tame solvent such as mineral spirits, soft rags, q tips and a tooth brush. There are of course commercial cleaning products on the shelf at any gun store etc. The goal is to remov...

I have a bid on the forearm but would be willing to sell the spring should I win. I need the wood.

Ejectors for sure. A lot of things to check -- sears on ejector hammers (ears)? -- alinement of cocking levers? -- excessive wear?

Since you have two guns, you may be able to compare the two to note any differences if you choose to disassemble them.

Re: Two new to me 1900s purchased, adding to the info base

Aha - sounds like we have part of the problem solved. One thing you could try when you want to remove the fore end is to first open the gun, depress the triggers and then close it while the triggers are still depressed. I know this will remove all the tension on the main springs making the weapon un...

Re: Two new to me 1900s purchased, adding to the info base

I'm still not clear on the extractor issue. It sounds like you actually have ejectors. Is the extractor/ejector one or two pieces? Although the barrels are stamped KD, Semmer documented other KEDs that were stamped KD. Happy to see that choke measurements for 392551 are not cylinder bore. According ...

Re: Two new to me 1900s purchased, adding to the info base

As with most things Remington it seems the exceptions are the rule. First with regards to #317956 -- according to the Semmer book it was produced early in 1902. When introduced in 1900, two versions were offered -- K grade which has Remington steel barrels and extractors and the KED grade which has ...

Re: Choke size / barrel length 1894

Well, in the first place it should be a Nieder point. Sorry about the error. So what's a Nieder point (or widows peak)? Most butt plates are flat but a butt plate with a Nieder point has a v shaped projection into the wood at the top of the butt stock. Most all Remington Arms Co. doubles had this st...

Re: Choke size / barrel length 1894

Well that means the barrels have been cut. Too bad. Also it appears the butt stock has been cut. Does it still have the Neider point? According to the Remington Double Shotguns book by Charles Semmer, he had tabulated 21 as of the publication date of 1996. Perhaps more have been reported since then.

Re: Choke size / barrel length 1894

Have you measured the bores? Using 0.729" as a nominal cylinder bore, an improved modified choke should measure about 0.704 - 0.706".

As for the butt stock, was it cut when installing the recoil pad?

Re: Choke size / barrel length 1894

When it left the factory it was choked somewhere between improved modified and full. Remington used 511 #8 pellets in its' 1 1/4 oz patterning loads. A leading 3 is assumed on the barrel stamping so --- 332/511 = 65% in a 30" circle at 40 yards. Unless special order - Remington did not offer a ...

Re: Help to ID old shotgun

Without the gun in hand I can only say it's a '78 or '79 model. All earlier lifter models had percussion fences and yours doesn't. However, as is the case with many early Remingtons, there are exceptions. In this case there is at least one '78 known with a Deeley & Edge forearm release and at le...
