Re: 1894's - Relative rarity of non 12 gauge models

Some of this information may be available. Charles Semmer collected data on all Remington SxS's while writing his book. How much was collected I don't know. I know I sent him data on about 10 - 12 guns which ranged from 1882's through 1900's. I don't know the family so I don't know if copies of the ...

Re: 1894's - Relative rarity of non 12 gauge models

I think that all of us in forum land would like to know the numbers of various gauges produced for all models of Remington SxS guns. Also, we would like to know all the other facts about these fine guns such as barrel codes, distribution of K grade versions and distribution of '94 grades. I fear tha...

Re: 1894's - Relative rarity of non 12 gauge models

I think I spoke a bit too soon. According to the Semmer book, there are no 1900's in 10 Ga. However, there is at least 1 KE grade documented in 20 Ga (p.253) with tales of a couple more out there but not proven. This 20 Ga. was produced in 1910 may have been special order as 20 Ga K grades do not ap...

Re: 1900 stocks

Do believe stock for 16 Ga. is narrower than either the standard 12 Ga or "Lite" 12 Ga. I'd contact one of the stock makers to see if they have a semi-inletted stock available. An 1894 stock should work as well if your 16 was made prior to 1906 as the butt plate was changed about that time...

Re: Taking a 1894 apart

It's been several years since I've had one stripped down completely. Not really difficult - everything is straight forward. As I recall, the second hardest part is removing and reinstalling the main springs -- had to makes jigs. The hardest thing might be removing the various screws which may be nea...

Re: 1894 markings

It appears that your A grade 1894 was made in 1900. We don't know what the M stands for but the E should indicate that your gun has ejectors rather than extractors. Remington first offered these fine guns only with damascus barrels but in 1896 began offering Remington steel barrels as well. If your ...

Re: Weight of 16 gauge 1894 and 1900

As I recall the 16 came in at about 7# give or take an once or so. The barrel lengths offered are given in the Semmer book.

I think you're correct --- much information is lost to us. But we still have the guns to use and enjoy and that's the most important thing.

Re: 1900 Barrel Markings

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was wrong assuming the "Lite 12" used a 16 frame as yours measures 1/16" less than mine across both the water table and bolsters. As to your DEO - the bolsters should be flush with the barrels. It's my theory that K grade bolsters were designed to be pr...

Re: 1900 Barrel Markings

Sorry to say but I'll be stuck in Peoria on the banks of the mighty Illinois along with the Asian carp.

2 questions - what are the measurements across the water table and bolster on your 16? What are the barrel lengths?

1900 Barrel Markings

Recently, another case of misinterpretation of grade characters stamped on a 1900 barrel occurred. As far as I know, other than the K, E and D, we have little or no information about the meaning of the rest of the characters associated with the grade stamp. The characters i'm aware of include X, ///...

The Dutchman butt plate pictured is correct for the 1894 assuming it has the Niedner point. Also available on eBay.

Re: 1889 Coach Gun Indicators?

Well it would appear that your barrel has been shortened. A good smith can refinish the muzzle as good as the factory.

As far as I know Remington did not make a "coach" gun.

Re: 1889 Coach Gun Indicators?

As for choke -- a cylinder bore would measure about 0.729" while an improved modified should measure about 0.709 - 0.704". Unless your barrels have been shortened AND rechoked you should be able to determine whether the barrel length is original. As for the 5 stamped on the water table -- ...

Re: 1984 s x s Barrel replacement

First, I assume you mean 1894 SxS. From what information you supplied it appears that you have a grade B with ejectors. You can confirm that by looking at the water table -- the grade is stamped across from the S/N. Yours should be stamped B. Many (most) of the barrel stamping characters on the the ...
