I did learn from a friend of mine that there is a Type 1 model which did not use serial numbers and a Type 2 model which did. The easiest way to quickly tell the difference is the Type 1 does not have a finger groove in the forend of the stock and the Type 2 does.

I have this old gun... it is a Remington Model 33, and it seems, from what I see, that they were serial numbered - I cannot find a serial number on mine, am I just looking in the wrong place? I have pulled the barrel off the stock and still cannot find one.
