Re: Rem 1858 markings- proofing? Inspection?

The letters are sub inspectors stamps where the parts were inspected before assembly. Sometimes parts were inspected more than once so it's not unusual to have two inspectors stamps on a part. The numbers on the rear of the cylinder are not a serial number. The serial number is on the bottom barrel ...

Re: 1858 New Model civilian 2 line address

A Remington made in 1864 would have a screwed in pinched front sight. They quit using the dovetailed cone in 1863. Uberti is the only one I know of using a dovetailed pinched sight.

Re: New to me New Model Army- a couple questions.

There shouldn't be very much side to side play. You will most likely have to use heat to get the nipples out or you will wind up using heat and an Ez Out. Italian nipples won't work. You will need to find nipples with the original thread size. I wouldn't worry about using full loads or at least 30 ...

Re: Found doing landscaping at my home

The revolver looks like it will clean up good enough to shoot. It must have been in very dry ground. If it had been here in MS it wouldn't be in anywhere near that good of a condition. I dug up an 1892 Winchester that was made in 1907 and it was too far gone. I got the lever freed up but it wasn't ...

Re: Unknown Rolling Block Action

From research I conducted on my own rifle it's an early No.1 military rifle with a straight bar extractor. The 1857 is just a batch number to keep parts together at the factory.

Re: Rolling block project

I was thinking just run a screw through the lug and into the barrel. I have the steel cap but I suck at woodwork, especially inletting. It's much easier for me to pour a pewter cap.

Re: Rolling block project

Thank you for the info. It is military. I'm not restoring it, I just wanted to turn it into a sporter if it wasn't too difficult. I'd rather have a sporter forend than the military length. It does have a lug in the barrel but it's not threaded and it's not dovetailed it's held in place with a screw ...

Rolling block project

I just picked up a two band No. 1 in 50-70. I think it was rebored from a .43 Spanish because the twist rate is 1:30. It's missing some parts and needs some TLC but the action is nice and crisp with no looseness anywhere. It's missing the rear sight, ejector, retainer for the pins and the cleaning ...

Hey from Mississippi

I'm 67 and just picked up a rolling block project rifle. I'll post about it in the proper section. I'm definitely not new to guns but am new to rolling blocks.
