Rem 1858 markings- proofing? Inspection?

Hello,

I have what I consider a 'shooter' grade 1858 that was made in Nov of 1864, from what I was told.

In addition to the 6 digit serial number it has letters stamped in various places on it.

On the barrel and frame I find the letter 'C' stamped in multiple locations.
On the trigger guard it ...

Re: New to me New Model Army- a couple questions.

Thanks for the info over this year everyone!

Just wanted to close the loop with my final update. I finally got it to rotate the cylinder and align with the bore so that I cannot see a hint of the edge of the cylinder face when it is locked up.

I had to fit a new cylinder stop and then fit a second ...

Re: New to me New Model Army- a couple questions.

Cocking the hammer and checking for cylinder play isn't quite complete. As the trigger is pulled the cylinder lockup gets slightly better so you should check lockup by cocking the hammer and then hold it back as you pull the trigger. You'll notice the lockup is usually a little better than it was ...

Re: Remington NMA- Date of manufacture and/or shipping date?

Hello,

Thanks for the info. I don't recall a cartouche on the grips, but I assumed they were replacement grips since it is as old as it is.

Remington NMA- Date of manufacture and/or shipping date?

Hello,

I have lucked into a Remington 1858 and want to be certain about the date of production and any shipment/use info anyone can find.

I am pretty new to black powder and don't even know where to search- other than here.

My serial number is 111667.

Standard 8" octagonal barreled 1858.

Any ...

Re: New to me New Model Army- Some NEW questions.

dpg06va,

thanks for the info and welcome.

I am still getting used to things and didn't realize I had a reply until tonight. I don't know if I am not getting messages about responses or what is going on.

I've fixed the trigger and now it breaks right around 3.5-4lbs, with a crisp break.

I found ...

Re: Spare cylinder for original New Model Army available?

Sorry for being a year late, but I just bought an original Remington New Model Army and had the same question about spare cylinders.

I have an original Remington cylinder that I need to have the nipples removed and replaced. My fears lead me to post this to see if the Uberti [or modified Pietta ...

New to me New Model Army- a couple questions.

Hello All,

Just picked up a New Model Army with the 3 line barrel markings and a serial number in the 111xxx block.

From what I've read that puts it approximately in the November 1864 production run.

The cylinder rotates properly and the bolt/stop pops up and holds it. I need to verify alignment ...
