Re: 870 TX

Do all trap barrels have a higher rib, or were some the same height as a field barrel? This gun has higher comb but when I mount the gun I'm seeing the top plane of the rib. Could be a replacement field barrel, I have no idea. Also, I'm measuring 3/8" less drop at the heel than 870TX literature spec...

Re: 870 TX

Compared the end where it meet receiver with another stock. Sure enough someone shaved the end of the wood such that the bearing plate gave no support. Unfortunate mistake.

Re: Stock Bearing Plate, Shim

Upon further review it's apparent that someone shortened the end of the stock so the bearing plate might as well habe been left out. I struggle to understand why someone would have done that. Maybe looking to eliminate an "unsightly gap" (you WANT that gap). Or perhaps someone adapted a pre-plate st...

Re: Stock Bearing Plate, Shim

Pre-plate stocks have a longer tapered end that reaches to the flat part of the receiver, and the taper itself meshes with the corresponding taper of the receiver. This should be perfectly adequate except the notch for the trigger group leaves a large piece of real estate without any support. The on...

Re: Stock Bearing Plate, Shim

Someday I'll pull the stock off serial 24,XXX and post a photo of the nose of the stock, and the gap if one DOES insert a bearing plate.

After seeing the ruination of this nice TX stock I think I'll fit the stock to accept one.

Stock Bearing Plate, Shim

Guys, Most probably realize the importance of bearing plate between stock and receiver. But the tragedy that I have before me warrants a warning for those who don't know. Very early 870 used the tapered socket fit to bear the brunt of recoil. The tapered surfaces acted as the thrust bearing to keep ...

Re: 870 TX

That was my suspicion whennI saw the damage. But the plate was in there (maybe not always in there though). Also, the wood that contacts the plate usually has "870" stamped on it. This one does not. So another possibility us that someone adapted a pre-bearing plate stock to use the plate but took of...

Re: 870 TX

The stock has a Pachmair pad on it, too. Not well fitted to the stock. And stock bolt not very snug. Perhaps looseness led to damage. With trap high comb it is of little use to me. Probably sell off the lumber. Can be made 100% serviceable and solid with some epoxy. Tinted brown it wouldnt even be v...

Re: 870 TX

Darn shame about the broken edge where buttstock meets receiver.

Re: 870 TX

Barrel marked MOD, date code DJ, but 25.5" long and this5: 1551560067385340037822.jpg Notice the itty bitty piece of rib at the cut. Bore measures 0.725 with cheapo calipers, so apparently cut short. No problem, was going to cut down and thread a 30" full choke to 22" for the kids, I'll hack this on...

Re: 870 TX

Gold pins and trigger. Jeweled bolt, not sure if that's original because it was buffed through the chrome. Straight wooden plug, steel follower. Action bars striking an immodest pose. Forearm is solid through the top, not split like later ones, since they all crack there anyhow (yes, its cracked and...

Early Wingmaster Bluing

Guys, I have serial 24,XXX that was ugly enough that I doubt it was refinished. The inside of the receiver is not blued except just around the edges for maybe 1/4" inside the edge, as if it was swabbed with solution, not immersed. Any other examples like this? If one planned to cold blue I dont know...

Re: 1950 Wingmaster Stock Question

Old post but I'm new here, and figured to resurrect to clarify something. The buttstock bearing plate was a design change at some point, I do not know when. I have serial 24,XXX and it does not have a bearing plate. When I tried to install one I found that there is not room for a bearing plate unles...
