Re: 1868 Remington revolver?

I suspect that the fake nipples were made because in some European countries, among which Germany I think, the law authorized collectors to possess antique cap and ball pistol much more easily than metallic cartridges ones.

Re: 1868 Remington revolver?

Hi Oran, That is a New Model Army, made in Dec of 1864, which has been converted. If the hammer doesn't have a firing pin, it was for a rim fire cartridge. Don Ware's book covers this conversion in detail. In 1868-69, Remington converted 4,540 New Model Army revolvers to .46 rim fire, in a deal wit...

Re: 1868 Remington revolver?

There is definitely something very wrong on this revolver, as one of the screws enter the frame from the left and the other from the right, and this has never existed on any Remington. And if the gun is really full size, then the cylinder is not of Remington origin as only the Police and the Pocket ...

Re: 1868 Remington revolver?

If it's a five shot cylinder, it could be a Police Model. But the frame is much smaller than the one of the Army or Navy Model, and the screws enter the frame from the right side instead of the left side as on the other two models.

A photo of the gun would surely help !

Re: Remington Rider Pocket revolver

Hi Elkilgh,

Seeing your revolvers, I note something similar to mine and somewhat surprising : how come the nickel plating is very dull on all of them ? I have nickel plated revolvers of the same period but different manufacturers on which the nickel remains pretty bright.

Re: Remington- Rider ,32 rimfire

I love this little gun which has been the first American double action revolver (except for the Allen Pepperboxes of course). My own one has been originally produced for metallic cartridges as there is no capping groove in the shield.

Re: 1858 NMA - Authenticity question

I can say for sure that your gun is not authentic. The reference to the only 1858 patent shows that the barrel would come from a Remington-Beals army revolver, a model which was manufactured in 1861-1862 for a total number of around 1900. So, it could not have a serail number as high as 127917 ! Bes...

Re: Remington Smoot #2

It's important to say that the Smoot #1 and #2 models are very special guns that would deserve to be much better known, since they are the only revolvers ever produced with the barrel and frame machined in a single piece of steel ! After that, Remington realized that the machining cost was way too h...

Re: Remington Smoot #2

This little book is really very interesting but it won't give you the year of manufacture of your gun, this being due to the loss of Remington archives. All that is known about the #2 Smoot revolver is that it was manufactured from 1877 to 1885 or 1888 depending on the sources, with around 3,000 uni...

Re: Remington Smoot #2

You have there a nice gun in good condition ! I also own a #2 Smoot revolver that is engraved ans has ivory grips, serial 826. The antique arms dealer who sold it to me and is welle renowned in Europe assured me that the engraving was factory done. There is a book writtten by Harry J. Parker, Ora Le...

Re: Remington 1858 cylinder info?

First, I must say that most people are wrong when they speak of the "Remington 1858". As a matter of fact, the replica that is made nowadays is of the "1863 New Model Army" (or Navy if in .36 caliber). The 1858 date refers only to a patent attributed to a guy named Fordyce Beals ...

Re: Remington 1858 serial and info help

According to Norm Flayderman's Guide To Antique American Firearms, which is the bible of antique arms collectors, Reminton produced 122,000 units of the .44 Remington New Army Model and 28,000 units of the .36 Remington New Navy Model. So, the 136497 serial is pretty odd since the two models were nu...

Greven, your gun is a Remington New Army Model which has been manufactured from 1863 to 1873. It is not made of stainless steel but it was originally blued and this finish is gone. The loading lever has been altered, as it should have the same shape as the one below. Arounf 122,000 units were manufa...
