Re: Help to ID old shotgun
Without the gun in hand I can only say it's a '78 or '79 model. All earlier lifter models had percussion fences and yours doesn't.
However, as is the case with many early Remingtons, there are exceptions. In this case there is at least one '78 known with a Deeley & Edge forearm release and at ...

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
So, when I remove the barrel i can see that there is a push rod in the action. That push rod seems to lock into a part on the barrel. For whatever reason, that push rod is not allowed to seat all the way when the barrel is attached. I wonder if the repair job on the front trigger guard is to blame ...

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
So, thanks to "jake" I found that there is an issue with the lifter. It should sit flat when the barrel is closed and it does not. When the barrel is removed, it's flat as can be!

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
Jake, the gun is a 12 gauge. Spoke wih my father and he took the gun in on trade in the 1960s and thought it would be a good wall hanger. Here are more pics to solidify that it is a 1879!

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
Does the serial number correspond with the 1879? I found that serial number on the barrel, on the water (can't recall that part name), on the forend and under the barrel release. They sure stamped the heck out of these old guns!

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
The forend is removed by pulling down a lever in the middle of the wood. It's centered in the forend wood. When you say top of receiver, can you explain more. Not sure which part you are referring to. Thank you

Re: Help to ID old shotgun
According to a gun book, this should be an 1873 and probably a first year gun. Says they made 5000 over like a 5 year period. Also, book said grade 2 had checkered stock and a rolled barrel. This barrel looks smooth and is not Damascus.

Help to ID old shotgun
Would someone please help me ID this shotgun? The serial number is 523. It is stamped twice on the removable forend, on the barrel and on the metal where the barrel mounts. The overall condition is not great, the blue is all worn off and looks like someone restrained the wood and some is on the ...
