Re: UPDATED:1875 Remington unknown markings

Ob, Thanks for the additional pictures. Your revolver is the first one I have seen with the batch number on the cylinder. It may have been placed there when the gun was taken apart to mill the frame bevels. The bevel shown in the picture with the number “8” on the frame is about twice as thick as th...

Re: UPDATED:1875 Remington unknown markings

Hello ob98, The 8 on the left side of the frame looks to me like it might be a rack number. I have never seen one on the side of the frame like that, however I have seen a couple of 1875’s with a rack number on the bottom of the frame. I do not believe the 152 on the back of the cylinder is a batch ...

Re: Special Remington or not?

Hello Nils, Would it be possible to get a picture of the back of the cylinder from your revolver and a side view of the firing pin. I have a non-Remington Factory cylinder cap conversion of a New Model Army which has been converted to 44 Remington center fire. The nipples have been removed and the h...

Hi Adam, I think the information you are looking for can be found under RSA Gallery on the RSA home page. The third album has 48 pages of serial numbers.

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Hello bob, Some pictures of your revolver would help, but from the information you gave it is most likely an original New Model Army. The small letters on the revolver are inspection marks. If the gun was accepted by the Ordnance Department there would have been the Principal sub-Inspectors cartouch...

Re: New model army .44 revolver sn: 54056

Hello Hudd,
Your revolver was manufactured in January of 1864. If it has a cartouche on the left grip panel it was purchased by the Ordnance Department from Remington. Unfortunately there are no records of whom it was issued to.

Re: Help! Reminton 1858 New Model Army .44 Caliber

Your revolver was made in March of 1864. You should be able to take the grip panels off fairly easy. Just remove the grip screw from the left side of the grips and the panels should come off. From your second picture it looks like there is a space between the toe of left grip and the frame where you...

Re: Help! Reminton 1858 New Model Army .44 Caliber

Hello Hugosaid, You have a genuine Remington New Model Army revolver made somewhere between 1861 and 1865. The small letters on the revolver are inspection marks. Once the revolver passed inspection the Principal sub-inspector stamped his cartouche on the left grip panel indicating the revolver was ...

Re: 1858 NMA - Authenticity question

Hello Ghaad, Welcome to the forum. It looks like you have a genuine New Model Army revolver which has seen some hard use. The small letters stamped in the various parts are sub-inspector marks. Once the revolver passed inspection the Principal Sub-inspector would stamp his cartouche on the left grip...

Re: Model 1875 S/N 10

Hello John, I am not aware of any of any Government inspection stamps on the metal of any 1875 revolvers. The Egyptian contract revolvers were stamped with a cartouche on the left grip. The two cartouches used are FR for Franklin Root who inspected the first approximately eight thousand revolvers an...

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Groucho, I have heard of the Springfield Research Service but have never tried to use it. I do have an old list of approximately 1800 Remington martial revolvers from the Springfield Research Service and one of the revolvers SN 48107 was issued to company D of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry...

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Hello Groucho, I suggest you get a copy of Don Ware's book "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861 to 1888". It is the Bible on Remington large bore revolvers manufactured during the Civil War and after. It covers the Beals, Elliot and New Model Army and Navy revolvers. It is still availab...

Hello Dacotah,
Your revolver was manufactured in March of 1865. It was in the last shipment of New Model Armies to the Ordnance Department during the Civil War.

Happy New Year,
