Re: Found a 51

Tried to contact the Model 51 research guy. Number doesn't work and the email bounces. Help?

Re: Found a 51

Update. I have it. 1919 gun, rough outside, filthy bore. Cleaning underway. Developing story, as the saying goes.

Found a 51

After decades of looking, one is inbound. Honest old gun and only $300. Suggestions for range ammo? This will be my Sunday gun. I have pics, but there's no way to upload them, it doesn't look like.

Re: Affordable, shooter grade Model 51s?

Another update. Last one fell through. New shooter grade gun, 9 groove slide, in PA... Is breech block cracking THAT major an issue?

Re: Affordable, shooter grade Model 51s?

Update. Found an honest old 51 online in KY. As I'm in TN, we'll just have to see if the seller is willing to ship to my gun shop. Free transfer for employees.

Affordable, shooter grade Model 51s?

The Model 51 is a bucket list gun. My EDC is an R51; the hesitation blowback mechanism is fascinating. Before the R51 was readily available, it wasn't hard to find honest old guns. Excellent mechanically, but serious cosmetic issues. Found 2 within about a month of each other in pawn shops in Maryvi...

Re: New (to me) Model 12.

Finally got the little flat metal piece (cartridge retainer?) in so my rifle will work as a repeater. Looks like all the pictures I have seen of early Model 12 Cartridge retainers, but the magazine won't go back in the reciever with the piece in the keyway on the bottom of the barrel. Seen youtube v...

Re: New (to me) Model 12.

One dead end I have hit on is the buttplate. Every repro I see has the Remington-UMC logo (which not even my buttplate has) and is the best part of an inch longer from heel to toe than mine is. Mine says "Remington Arms Co." in a circle and is only about 4" from heel to toe. Looks lik...

Re: Remington 14 Carbine in 25 Rem

You're rolling the dice without detailed bore condition info. Brass can be made, but the bore is the thing and that's a lot of cash for a 25 where the bore isn't known.

Re: New (to me) Model 12.

Modest update: I must not have had the mag tube seated when I was test-feeding the Aguilas, as the mag is completely inop. Drop even one round through the tube and latch the tube and it locks up. Release tension and it feeds like a champ. Disassembled the piece to inspect for worn/damaged/missing pa...

Re: Remington 14 Carbine in 25 Rem

That IS a decent looking .25. Bore condition will be the deal maker. It is VERY common to find the .25s with rough bores (at least around here), as so many were made before the advent of Kleenbore priming. About like early 22s and Lesmok or black powder. See, in Appalachia, a lot of feed stores or d...

Re: New (to me) Model 12.

Found some Standard Velocity stuff, and oddly enough my 12 seems to feed Aguila well and not like CCI at all. Time to start experimenting and see if this sewer pipe of a bore will provide any sort of accuracy. Might even try single-feeding the subsonic CCIs I found.... Or maybe get the plated Armsco...

Re: New (to me) Model 12.

Will take that under advisement. Haven't seen any other but high velocity anywhere local in a long time. Nobody around here has had any problems out of 12s related to ammo, though.
