Hello Ron, in picture 3, there appears to be what looks like the remains of a maker's or proof mark, just above the lanyard ring (I think I can see a faint "G"). This could be a trick of the light, or some other scratches and dents - can you get a better picture of it?
George.

Re: 1858 - what do I have here?? Early serial?
Mike,
Are you still there? The revolver you have looks very nice and does have the low hammer. Have you taken the gun completely apart yet? To get the mainspring out (after removing the two-part grips), place a small block of wood under the grip frame, near the spring recess cut-out, place a ...

Re: 1858 Remington New Model US
VonVladimir,
Don Ware also states (earlier in his book, on page 67)
"... New Model cylinders (identified by the safety notches) or with cylinders that did not have matching serial numbers. "
Here he is referring to Elliot and Beals Army models, but looks like serial numbers were stamped on cylinders ...

Re: 1858 Remington New Model US
VonValidmir, thank you - we now have some debate. I have borrowed a copy of that book, but found it was more concerned with sales and contract history, with only a very small portion, towards the end, about "hardware".

Re: 1858 - what do I have here?? Early serial?
Mick, I'm attaching a picture of my repro NMA .44, made in 1978 (decoded from the Italian stampings). Made for the Navy Arms Co. N.J. by Pietta.
Note the 3 digit code "piece parts" numbers on grip frame and trigger guard.
Also note the short guard "tang". My cylinderhas got a different part number ...

Re: 1858 Remington New Model US
Could the cylinder be a replacement?

There are no serial numbers on the Remington New Model Army cylinders. On none of them ,exept on convertet ones for metalic cartridges.
Sometimes there is a conversion number on the cylinder.Like this one on the picture.

Re: 1858 - what do I have here?? Early serial?
Mick,
Welcome to the forum - you got about the same welcome as I did on my first posting (not a lot).
It doesn't look as if your example is an original. The photo of the exposed grip frame shows 3 recesses that look as if they were from a modern mould casting. This area should have been level. The 3 ...

New acquisition - 1863 NMA .44 revolver
I've transferred most of this from my first introductory posting - bought the revolver a couple of weeks ago.
I've done some preliminary research and know, from its S/N 30022, that it was manufactured in August 1863.
The majority of the inspector's stamps are the letter "A", in a slightly Italic ...

Re: First posting - new forum member
First post seems to have worked, so here is my "introductory" post.
Last week I bought my 2nd .44 NMA, at an auction at the Bisley Shooting Centre in the UK (where I am from). I've done some preliminary research and know, from its S/N 30022, that it was manufactures in August 1863.

Hello,
I attempted a first post over the weekend, with info on my new purchase. Whilst doing a "preview" prior to submitting, I was returned to the now empty "form". Assuming this was part of the "first post" moderation I waited. Nothing has happened, so I am testing again with a shorter and simpler ...
