Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Nuts...one more inconsistency I just caught....the screw head as on your barrel band is also on left side of mine as well... meaning that they stamped the U at random on either side. All these years I never really took note of this simple feature, but I suppose it was a fact of life of mass producti...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Hi Scorpion8....Just did a thorough look see on one of my very late model Remington Arms Company marked RBs and I apologize... the "U" with the top facing the muzzle is indeed on the Left Side. To be certain of this, I examined my near factory new Remington Spanish Model that came out of t...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Yep ...very true and so many older guns have gone this route and have simply vanished from the scene. I recollect about 35 years ago when a gunsmith showed me a "sporterized" rolling block he re-blued, restocked, and re-barreled to .44-40 for a customer. I noted the words EM.L Nagant on th...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Ohhh....Please by no means have it re-barreled as far too many originals have already suffered this fate and like any other antique firearm, there are only so many left in existence. You can obtain .43 Spanish brass and .375 grain .439 diameter cast bullets from Buffalo Arms who have a website and y...

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Thank you for the photos...I kind of thought there were actually "U's" on the bands, but no I still stick with my thoughts on this one....condition wise it still looks similar to those in the Uruguayan fort museum, of course the numbers are different.

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
My pleasure, happy to be of any help. Say if you would, could sent a photo of those "squares" adjacent to the barrel bands? Thanks so much.

Re: Dating a Remington Rolling Block
Hello Scorpio8, I viewed your posting and may be able to give you a boost on your question. From all appearances, your particular rifle appears to be one of the later Remington Spanish Model RBs. Having the last patent year as 1874, I would suspect the tang markings start off with E. Remington &...

Re: Carbine witch Chassepot lug...
Hi Philippe, I agree with Ed, these are great photos. I talked with a friend in Uruguay on this and according to him, many old rolling blocks there in the past were re-chambered to use 28 gauge shot shells as stocks of the original .43 Spanish cartridge were practically depleted by the 1930s and 40s...

Re: Carbine witch Chassepot lug...
Philippe, This example seems enigmatic in more ways than one. First, a determination of the caliber would help through either a chamber cast, or attempting a "ball park" fitting of cartridges. Looking at the chamber however, gives the impression of a base diameter akin to .58 Berdan or .57...

Re: Model No. 1 1/2 Rolling block
Hello George, Thank you for the reply...Say I really don't know about that added screw feature as its sort of something new to me regarding the Whitney as I have never taken notice of such a feature on the military size action. It MIGHT be a gunsmith addition but I honestly cant answer that. Pricewi...

Re: Model No. 1 1/2 Rolling block
Hello George, I have been away here for a bit...Anyhow it seems your action as shown has no Remington tang address and from my view, it appears to be a late Whitney type 2 action. If the extractor has an "S" configuration, that would be it, not to mention that they snap back like the later...

Re: Model No. 1 1/2 Rolling block
Hi Dixiejack, Im sorry to hear you received little response on your inquiry. Though these variants are out of my area of specialty, I can give you some basic info here. The No.1-1/2 Remington Sporting rifles were made in both rim and centerfire calibers; .22 being the smallest with the .44-40 Winche...

Re: Model 4 Rolling Block 32 rimfire Manufacture date
Hello, Even though I primarily specialize in military rolling block rifles I may be able to give you hand in what your trying to find out. The No.4 New Model Remington rolling block was produced from around 1890, through 1933, and was available in .22 short, long and long rifle calibers as well as i...
