Re: Remington contract M1841 rifle
Thank you for the reply. This gun has no lug, no tooling and retains the original brass front sight, so I don’t think it was modified. It might have been recently filed, ground and polished by a careless reenactor or a kid in an effort to remove pitting. Regardless, I like it because it is a Remingt...

Remington contract M1841 rifle
I have an 1853 dated example of the M 1841. Unfortunately someone sanded the stock and aggressively cleaned up the barrel. The barrel is bright and I’m wondering whether or not the original was blued/browned. Everything I’ve read indicates that all M1841s, even contract rifles, were browned and I ha...

Re: Heavy Barrel No. 1 Sporting Rifle
OK, yes the lower tang is longer than the upper. I've seen no reference to barrels without the Remington stamp. Do you know something about this? Also, the tang sight is strange because I see nothing quite like it in the books. i've added photos to the link, I hope they are helpful. Photo link: http...

Heavy Barrel No. 1 Sporting Rifle
I bought my first RB a year or so ago and have been too busy to figure out exactly what I have. I'm hoping some of you Experts will look at my photos and tell me what you think about this old gun. What I think I know about the rifle is: The gun was made in 1874 or 1875. Caliber is 44-77 The barrel d...

Re: No. 1 Rolling Block Dovetail Mounted Sights
Thank you Dick Hosmer, for the response. I committed to the rifle mentioned with the dovetail rear barrel sight. The rifle is a sporting version in 44-77, however. Actually the rear sight is missing, your input should help me look for and hopefully find a replacement. After the rifle arrives, I'll p...

No. 1 Rolling Block Dovetail Mounted Sights
I'm just beginning to learn about the No.1 because I would like to buy one or two early examples (45-70/44-77 and/or a lighter gun) that were originally sold for use in the US during the 1860s or 70s. I ordered the book by Roy Marcot but it hasn't arrived. I am not a collector, just looking for thre...

Re: 1894 haammeless chokes
The right barrel, assumed to be with a cylinder choke, measures 0.70 at the muzzle with a basic dial caliper. This is good news for me because it indicates the chokes were not altered. From what you are telling me I assume the barrels of this gun are actually cylinder and full as I thought based on ...

1894 haammeless chokes
Hello all – I found this interesting site after searching the 1894 hammerless shotgun and seeing reference to this site at other sites i.e., http://www.16ga.com. I’ve learned that my 1894 Remington is a grade A with “Remington steel” barrels. It seems everyone advises to shoot it only with light 2 ½...
