What steel on late Rolling Block No. 2
Remington made Rolling Block No. 2's from the 1880's till somewhere around 1910 or 1913. My question is did Remington use so called " smokeless steel" on its' No. 2'safter 1896 until production ceased or did they continue to use soft steel/steel for BP?

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers
Quite possible you've seen the rifle. The gun dealer I purchased the rifle from got it at a gun show I believe in Oklahoma. Probably never know anything else about the rifle' owner but it obviously had special meaning to someone and now to me.

Re: Date of manufacture for a Rolling Bloc Sporter No. 1 45-
Roundtop. the " ST' on the receiver is closer to the front breech block pin hole on the receiver body and would be covered by the receiver button when assembled.

Re: Date of manufacture for a Rolling Bloc Sporter No. 1 45-
Looks like 1879 or 1880 is a good guess on my 45-70. This was still early enough to have been a buffalo gun. The rifle is far from being beat up. Who ever owned it took care of it but it has definelty been fired alot. .Dark barrel and some pitting but far from a sewer pipe. Most of the blue has a ru...

Re: Date of manufacture for a Rolling Bloc Sporter No. 1 45-
Thanks Roundtop.I'll be interested in what others think. The total Rolling Block Sporters No.1 manufactured is suppose to be around 12,500 plus or minus. Most of these Rolling Blocks where supposedly manufactured up until 1886 when Remington went into receivership. During the remaing three years til...

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers
As usual, I was wrong. That's OK it's how you learn. It appears that many Rolling Blocks made in 1873 and up may well have spent considerable time either in storage at Remington or a hardware store etc. The culprit the financial " Panic of 1873" which didn't end until 1879. It affected bot...

Re: Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers
I'm no expert but I find it hard to believe that a Rolling Block with a Silver Presentation Plaque was made in 1874 when it has a plaque is dated 1879. That is Five ( 5 ) years earlier then the plaque. The barrel, the tang and the forearm snabble all have the same serial number. If you are correct t...

Remington Rolling Block Serial Numbers
It nevers ceases to frustrate me when you look at or purchase a No.1 Sporter with matching serial numbers and it it isn't even possible to determine the year of manufacture. Occasionally one gets a little information as to a manufacturing year. I have a 44-77 No. 1 Sporter with a silver plaque. No wa...
