Re: What side got the Remington 1858 ?

Hi Docent, There were 3 large frame, Remington pistols used in the Civil War. The first was the Beals, today called the Old Model, the 1861 model, and the 1863, or new model. Most are called an 1858 because of the patent date on the barrel. An internet search should produce pictures of the different...

Re: Question on 1890 Revolver

Is it an 1890? Is the barrel marking E. Remington & Sons, or Remington Arms? The mainspring is incorrect. The web doesn't look quite right. But, that may be my eyes. The file marks could mean just about anything that your imagination can come up with. The usual is that the gun has 4 bodies on it,...

Re: A few questions about a Model 1863

If you want to shoot it, use the repo parts. If it won't be shot, then I'd use the original parts.
Good luck

Does the serial on the trigger guard tab also match? What finish does the gun have? You have a rare gun so enjoy it.

Have you tried Dixie Gun Works for parts? Another source is Jim Shaffer, 412-672-6830. You can also post a WTB in the RSA journal on on this site.

Re: White / Yellow grips on Over / Under .41 Derringer?

Those are probably plastic grips made in the 1950s or 60s. Mother of Pearl is too brittle to checker, an d real ivory doesn't have the color pattern that those grips have. Remington escutcheons have three small points equally spaced around the circumference so I believe that the escutcheons came wit...

Re: 1875 Revolver 45 cal. s/n 16

You have a very rare and desirable gun. Very few were made in 45 Colt. The Cylinder looks like its a 45, but try a 45 or 44 case to make sure. The 11.453 is the metric designation of .45 leading to the possibility that it was sent to another country, but then why hide the number under the grip panel...

Re: Remington 1863 new model pocket

There is a fourth model of the pocket pistol. It has a brass frame and a steel trigger guard. Remington would have introduce parts changes during production and would use the old parts first, thus creating several models.

Re: Remington & Sons Sept 14, 1858 pistol - looking for info

It appears that you have either a Remington, Single Action Belt Model, or a Police model. The screws on the belt or police models enter the frame from the right while the Army and Navy models have screws that enter the frame from the left. A Belt barrel should be 6 1/2", while a police barrel c...

Re: Remington 1875 Finish/configuration

In general, Remington pistols will have the screws, hammer, and trigger blued. The trigger guard usually had the same finish as the rest of the pistol. Check the tab on the trigger guard to see if the number matches the frame number. If so you're safe in believing that its the original finish. If no...

Re: Remington New Model Pocket, 1st Model (Brass frame), .31

Are you sure that the frame is brass? Only about 650 brass frame pockets are believed to have been made, so a brass frame pocket should have a number below 1000. Some people believe that the brass frames were made overlapping the iron frames and that explains the why there are brass frames with 4-di...

Re: Information Requested on BEALS Patent Rem 1858 36 Calibe

In his book on Remington Army and Navy pistols, Don Ware believes that when the design changes were made on the single wing pistols, the new versions were serialed from the number 1. I don't believe that he gave a reason other than there are duplicate numbers on the "regular" Beals Navies.

Re: Cylinder Pin for my Remington New Model

For Repo try Ken van Patten (vanpatten3376@comcast.net), Dixie Gun Works and Numrich Gun Parts. For Original you should try Jim Shaffer, 412-672-6830 (11am-7pm EST). He can be pricy, so how bad do you want it?
