Re: Remington New Army
Hi PJ, Welcome to the world of Remingtons. According to Ware's book, your gun was made in May, 1864. The cartouche looks like it might be a B H, which is Benjamin Hannis, a principle sub inspector. As to other info, you'll have to scour Ware's book, but generally we only know when a gun was made, so...

Re: 1885 new model army SN info
The only thing that I can add is that the cartouoche on the grip, OWA, is for principle sub-inspector, O.W. Ainsworth. The other letters are just other sub-inspectors' marks indicating that part passed inspection. Enjoy the pistol.

Re: Rolling Block Pisstols Model 1871, 1891,& 1901
Hello all, I'll finish this discussion on the board where it started. Brad and I have exchanged several e-mail, and hopefully he now has the into to convince the RCMP that the gun he wants is a legal antique. My sole source for info was the "Remington Rolling Block Pistols", by Jerry Lands...

Re: Rolling Block Pisstols Model 1871, 1891,& 1901
Hi Brad, Now ghat I think about it for a few minutes, the ATF says that the frame is the firearm. Therefore, in the US, any inspected RB would have a frame that was made no later than 1875, regardless what the model date might be. It would be interesting, and if I were trying to get an inspector mar...

Re: Rolling Block Pisstols Model 1871, 1891,& 1901
Hello again Brad, As far as I know, the ATF classifies the RBs by the model. So an 1891 is an antique, and the 1901 would be a Modern gun. From what you say, as far as the RCMP is concerned, the gun must be made before 1898. If they go by the frame date, then all RBs with inspectors marks were made ...

Re: Rolling Block Pisstols Model 1871, 1891,& 1901
Hi Brad, Is your pistol Army or Navy? It can make a difference. All my info comes from the RB Pistol book by Jerry Landskron. My comment on "can't be dated" was bad phrasing. The US RB pistols were all made in a short time frame (see below), and the commercial frames can't be dated, as far...

Re: Rolling Block Pisstols Model 1871, 1891,& 1901
Hello bcowern, The following info comes from the "bible" on RB pistols, Remington Rolling Block Pistols, by Jerry Landskron. As the above pointed out, the name change occurred in 1888, and any guns made in and after that year were marked, "Remington Arms." There is a Model...

Re: Remington model 1858 part info
Welcome to the forum. Your serial was made in May of 1863. You should list the parts that you need. If just one chamber was blown out, you could display the pistol with that chamber hidden. You should try Dixie Gun Works for parts. They are on line at: www.dixiegunworks.com there are several other s...

Re: info on a 1858 serial number believed to be 1224
Just found this post in the General area instead of the handgun area. A picture would e very helpful to determine the model. Are the letters, "pf" part of the serial number? The serial will be in 3 places. The left grip frame under the grip, underside of the barrel, and on the trigger guar...

Re: A beautiful DD refinished in GERMANY (1999)
Hi,
A very nice refinish. The frames were iron while the barrels were steal. This results in the frames turning a plum brown when re-blued in modern, hot blue process. What ever process was used for the re-finish resulted in a very nice and even overall finish. Very nice pistol.

Is it possible that the marks are over stamps of a previous mark? Don't know why this would happen, just tossing it out as a possibility.

Hi rick,
In Balto for the antique arms show. Your number was made in Jan, 1864. You should check the other two locations to see if the numbers match.

Re: Help ID Remington Revolver - makers marks look wrong
Hi Rick, Not sure what you mean about stripping it down. The only markings should be on top of the barrel and the 3 serial numbers that you know about. Those are easy to check, two only need one screw to be removed. Barring no serials, it may have been a lunch box special. The cylinder could have co...

Re: Double Digit Serial number on Remington New Model?
Bill must be right. It's the only way to explain the two digit number. I had to dig out Ware's book, and found a comment that Rem shipped a second gun with the "fancy" one which were sent to each state. The second gun was just a regular gun with Ivory grips. This may be one of those guns, ...
