Re: Model 95

Let's start with the basics. The O/U was not called the model 95 until 1922. Before then it was just a Double Derringer. Your gun is a third model, made 1888 to 1910. It is called by some, a "longline" version because of the length of the top barrel marking. The number 43 is a batch number...

Re: CW era New Model Army

Hi Mark,

Your gun was made in March 1863, but as above, no way to know where it went to.

Re: Something bothers me on my Remington Belt model

Hi,

I've checked Ware's book on the Army Navy models and found nothing on any hammers that have serrations instead of knurling. Hopefully someone will chime in with the answer.

Re: ID ìng a Remington 1858

The single initial marks are from the inspector that checked that particular item. There were a lot of them and I'm not aware of any list of their names. We do know the names of the the final acceptance inspectors that stamped their cartouche in the left grip.

Re: Engraved revolvers with etched cylinders

Pic of the scene with a dog. The rider has fired his pistol and the puff of smoke can be seen.

Engraved revolvers with etched cylinders

Have come across a few engraved large, and medium revolvers with etched cylinders, and wonder why etched and not engraved? Any one have any info on these oddities?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: NMA

Saw the article and the pic. Next time at a show with an auction house display, I'll play more attention to the guns they bring.

Re: 1858

It looks like it has an Old Model (1861 model) barrel on a New Model gun. If the numbers match, I'd say that it is a transition gun. Rem was just using up barrels on hand.

Re: RESEARCH PROJECT: BELT/RYDER REVOLVERS

Ho LBM, The DA can be fired as a SA, but I have read, and been told that the design was for smooth DA operation and that SA may cause problems with the lockwork. Can't cite a source, but when you try a DA in DA and then try it in SA, the SA pull is anything but smooth, and the hammer doesn't always ...

Hi Jay,

You might try reposting this in the shotgun section for better results.

Re: yet, yet another serialnr question (1858 navy rider belt )

You're not alone in your confusion. It was thought that the DA was made first, and the SA came several months later. It is believed that both were 1863 to 1873, first as percussion, then later as conversion models in .38rf. It was also thought that they were serialed separately, but the new research...

Re: yet, yet another serialnr question (1858 navy rider belt )

I will have to disagree with my friend, Bill. The Belt is a SA only model, while the Belt D/A, or as some called it, a Rider is DA only, and it is not recommended to fire it SA. They use most of the same parts, but the frame and springs are different.

OK Bill, your turn to disagree with me. ; )

Re: Thanks

Aren't the date codes the shipping date? The serial has to be stamped once the receiver is finished, but as above, parts are stored awaiting assembly. For handguns, the date code is the shipping date, so I'd guess that the same applied to rifles. I'm certainly open to correction by those in the know...
