Re: new 1889

There are many low pressure 12ga target loads. I've used American Select, Red Dot, Green Dot, 700X, promo, amd many others. The only trick is to keep the shot charges down to 1oz, or preferably 7/8 or 3/4oz in the 12ga. Check out the Alliant or Hodgdons web sites. Or Claybusters web site.

Re: Your Remington "Shooter"?

My trap gun shooters are either of my 1894 F grade trap guns. For skeet either my B or C grade Remingtons. For 5-stand my 1889 32" barrel hammergun. Actually in our 5-stand where the birds aren't that far out my B or C grade would work or my one F grade with .015 choke in both barrels. That's m...

Re: new 1889

I've shot 10s for a number of years now. Because my shooting is limited to claybirds it's 1oz of shot with any target gunpowder. I just use 12ga mild load data. 1oz in a 1o will just smoke those ole claybirds.

new 1889

The only 89 I had I traded for a 3100. Always sorry I did a 89 with 32" barrels came up for a decent price on the internet. The was a crack repair years ago from the frame around to the back of the top tang. I knew this before I bought it. I wanted those 32" barrels. The gun came. Tight on...

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?

Some 89s have a recessed water table. Those were called light weight. I have both. Straight across the table, and a step down.

Maybe you're thinking of the 1889. Some were advertised as light weights.

I must be loosing it. I'm surfing my usual gun forums, come here and read this one and make a second post almost the same as one I had made earlier. I mean, can't I read any more ? Anyway, I hope the OP got to shoot his gun.

Re: E Remington & sons

Brad Bachelder out of Grand Rapids Michigan knows of someone who has the old original pre-inletted stocks from Remington. He got one for me and fit it to the gun. It was very reasonable. That's too nice a gun to be a wall hanger. My 1873 hammer lifter is shot all the time with low pressure reloads.

Re: shot countg

It's my understanding is if there's two digits the third one is understood to be a three. So you'd have 325. But you have three digits so 125 out of 510 [ number of 8s in a 1 1/4oz of shot ] is a really open choke. Check your bores and choke with a inside dial mic to be sure.

Re: E Remington & sons

It looks like it's already been cleaned. The only time I'd worry about the " intrinsic value ", or any kind of value, is if it is a high end gun, and this it ain't. I don't for a minute hesitate to clean, or have a gun refinished so it once again looks nice. Who ever did clean it did a nic...

Re: 1879 10 Gauge?

If you go to a public range around hunting season you my find some empty 10ga shells. Cut them off to about 2 3/4 to 2 7/8 and load some up with mild 12ga data. There will be less pressure in the 10 because of the larger diameter chambers for the pressure to work against. I have a 82 Remington 10, a...

Re: 1879 10 Gauge?

I have a couple 3 10ga guns - a Remington, Parker, and a Lefever. I shoot em all with nitro loads. You can buy RSTs or if you reload, roll your own. First cut your shells to 2 7/8, then pick any mild [ under 9000psi ] 12ga load. The 12ga load used in a 10 will have less pressure because of the large...
