Another 1891 Rolling Block pistol

Attended the CGCA collector show this weekend and purchased another Model 1891 Rolling Block target pistol. Last one I found was a Arthur Hubalek built version, and this one was built by Hubalek's mentor HM Pope! Hubalek was the only apprentice Pope ever had, and Pope taught him how to rifle barrels...

I doubt it's a black powder era rolling Block. Likely a later smokeless powder variant.

Re: Identification for Rifle/Caliber

Need one more measurement to take a guess. Need the neck diameter, and groove diameter to know the caliber.
At 1.547" length case I don't offhand know what cartridge it could be since it doesn't match any I know of for standard Rolling Block military cartridges?

NDduckhunter wrote: Fri Apr 26, 2024 5:34 am So how are you supposed to measure the dove tail exactly? Is it from the top of the dove tail or bottom?
Base of the dovetail is the width. I usually remove the front sight and measure it.

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

A lot of those had two rear dovetails, so that's correct. But if the front dovetail is close to 3/8" it's likely your barrel was shortened and a new dovetail cut to 3/8" width. I kinda suspected that when you mentioned it was a 26.5" barrel as that's not a correct length for a Remingt...

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

I bought a bunch of military Rolling Blocks back in the late 70's and 80's too. I;d shoot them awhile and then get bored and sold them. They were so cheap I figured I'd always find another cheap. Then one day I noticed they suddenly weren't cheap if they were good shooters! I still buy military acti...

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

Quite likely that locals in your area did let go of those old buffalo guns, but also likely it was well before our time. A lot of big time collectors knew what part of the country had the most of a certain type of gun, and focused on attending gun shows, or hitting local gun shops in those areas to ...

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

I’m really into .43 Spanish and .44/77’s they are very old historical calibers and were pretty darn stout to boot. I like .50/70 just as much but it’s not as sexy as the .44/77, lol. .50/70 is super easy to get to shoot well and the cases last forever, which is good because they are almost impossib...

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

The .44-77BN was indeed a favorite of hunters for big game like buffalo, and could still have been used for that when it was new in the mid 1870's as the northern regions of the buffalo ranges lasted longer than southern areas did.

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

Yours is fairly easy since it's serial number is close to those used in the 1874 Creedmoor matches that were in the low 3000 serial numbers. I'd guess 1874-75 range for yours.

Re: .44/77 Remington rolling block

If a Rolling Block was made during a time when the top tangs were roll stamped, and a tang sight was ordered, then they'd definitely omit the rollstamp on the top tang. But not sure they'd even put those patent dates on the left side then or not? I have 7 or 8 #1 Rolling Blocks from an early number ...

Re: No 1 or 1 1/2 ?

It's really sad what has happened to these modern books as soon as they're all sold out. I bought my copy maybe a year after it came out as I've found they drop slightly after 6 months to a year. I think I paid $75 then, and it's well worth twice that. But now I see copies offered at $1000, and it j...

Thanks! The Hepburns are wonderful, but one in .32-20 really appealed to me as I love the .32-20 and rarely see it in a Hepburn.

Re: No 1 or 1 1/2 ?

I feel so bad that your gorgeous Rolling Block got damaged. The Stock Doctor does perfect work, and it will be like original when done, and also have the stock maker's stamp still, and serial number too.
I sure hope you can get the original fixed and not need a new stock.

Re: No 1 or 1 1/2 ?

Not sure how your claim is going, but I stumbled across this site for someone doing very nice stock work.

https://dutchmanwoodworks.com/

He has some pictures of stocks he's built copying originals that were broken, and might be another option for your rifle?
