Re: Rolling Block -1863 Remington

Remington made thousands of Springfield M1861/63 musket conversions-to-breechloader starting in 1868. They also made a very few salesman samples using other muzzle loading arms — the Remington “Zouave rifle” being a very rare example.

Re: "B" marked military rolling block barrel bands

If it has no other clearly Egyptian markings then it may be a French contract rifle, 1870-1.

Spencer rimfire cartridges

Where can I find modern made .50 Spencer rimfire cartridges to experience shooting my Remington carbine? The antique stuff is a bit expensive.

Re: Remington RB Ingersoll Life Line Gun 1890

The tang markings say when the original gun was made, not when Ingersoll remanufactured it.

Re: Inherited .50-70 Carbine Jun'21

The rear sight is a Dexter Patent, authorized for use by the state about 1878 in an effort to improve the accuracy of long range shooting. The original small rear sight was totally inadequate.

Re: "Short transformed" conversion musket

P.S. It was sold at auction number 120, not the latest one. Does anyone have that catalog, to send a copy of the photo?

"Short transformed" conversion musket

Does anyone know who acquired the "short transformed" (i.e. converted to breechloader) rolling block rifle in this photo? It was sold at the recent Amoskeag Auction Co. sale. I would like to contact the owner.

Re: Antique or not?: Remington Rolling Block Baby Carbine with 20" barrel

No, there’s no way to tell pre-post 1898. All Remington Arms Co. made carbines had 20 inch barrels. The ER&S carbines had differing barrel lengths and choices of .44 RF or CF, 1884-88.

Re: Antique or not?: Remington Rolling Block Baby Carbine with 20" barrel

Light Baby Carbines with a tang marked “E. Remington &Sons” were made prior to the company’s bankruptcy in 1888. If marked “Remington Arms Company” then made later. There is insufficient ‘serial number’ (or factory inventory number) data to be able to accurately track pre/post 1898 manufacture. ...

Re: Rolling Block Numbers 1,2,3,4 (?)

In general, the number designation was for sporting rifles only. Military rifles were given a name, i.e. Light Baby Carbine, Spanish Model, transformation rifle, Danish Model.

Re: 58 Roberts

Bob,
Only South Carolina bought the Remington transformation in .58 Roberts.

The stocks bought by Remington were more likely stock blanks — but if actual machined stocks, Remington would have removed any cartouches in reconfiguring the wood with a slimmed wrist to fit the frame.

Re: Springfield/Remington 1870 Rolling Block Carbine

Note that Steve’ And Matt’s carbines are different alterations. Steve’s has the Whitney rotary extractor as evidenced by the extra screw on the left side of the frame. Matt’s carbine appears to retain the original sliding extractor.

Re: How much of a bitsa is this Military Roller ?

The frame lacks a date and SN, so it may have been reworked.
