Re: Cleaning Up My Model 721 .30-06

I've pretty much completed the cleaning of the barrel exterior. The rusting that looked so bad when I first retrieved this rifle cleaned up pretty well with a combination of removal techniques.

Now, to the internals. The last time (to my knowledge) that this rifle was fired was in the early 1970's ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Remember the first rule is "do no harm."

Good point. I'm happy to have removed most of the dirt and grease/oils oxidized by years of use and exposure to the air.

It's also given me a chance to reconnect with some of my family history; people I remember as a child or (in some cases) as a young ...

Cleaning Up My Model 721 .30-06

As I have discussed elsewhere, I inherited a Remington 721 manufactured in September 1955 and modified by Remington in April 1957 according to the barrel codes.

And I have removed the visible rust on the right side of barrel and I'm still working on what I can remove with respect to the residual ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Thank you. It was a gummed up mess, to be sure. I guess it's not surprising. It seems like I caught a glance of this shotgun being used during hunting down on the family property in the Hampton, VA area.

One of the treasure troves of things I didn't know my dad had was many of the pictures and ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Another area of exterior clean-up on this shotgun was the wooden stock and fore-end.

The stock has all the sort of scratches and dents of a well-used shotgun. Of course, this gives the shotgun some character . Fortunately, in my assessment of how it looks, the stock appears to be in good shape. It ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

I too started with a single barrel 12ga. -- a 36" H&R followed by a Remington 1900 KED. For the first two years or so it seems all I had to do was point the barrels skyward, fire and something would fall down. Perfect fit for me.

I just had to chuckle at that!

Not manna from Heaven; game from ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

That's interesting about the cost difference and on the inflation cost side of things, it does sound about right.

From the literature/book that I've looked at, was there a reason to select extractors over ejectors (other than cost)? What I remember from my youth was that the brass base of the ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

A short update:

So, from what I've been able to determine, this shotgun was most likely purchased and owned by my great grandfather. My great, great grandfather passed away in 1899 (age 79) and I think was unlikely to have purchased/owned it. They were all farmers back in those days. Tracking ...

Of Shotguns and Typewriters

I recovered an old typewriter from my dad's house. I used it for a number of years to type before getting my own typewriter sometime during high school.

My brother and I were closing out a chapter in our lives as we were making the last passes through the house we grew up in and that became our ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Thanks for the clarification. I know I had seen some reference to spring loaded ejectors. These are not spring loaded and the action of opening the barrels does draw the shells out of the chambers.

When I return home I intend to take an inventory of the shells I have. Some, like Western Express ...

A couple of daylight photos of the Model 1894 that I've been working on.

A top view of the watertable. It's cleaned up quite nicely. Serial number and "B" stamped on the bridge.

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

@Researcher

Thanks for the great information. It gives more clarity to the history of this shotgun.

Great image of those Damascus barrels. Even as a child, I was intrigued by the patterns on the barrels. More stuff I haven't though about in ages.

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Your B grade '94 entered service in 1898. !894s were offered in grades A through E with the A grade the least expensive. The A grade had no engraving while each ascending grades had increasing degree of engraving and better wood/checkering. The B grade had a bit of engraving while Remington Arms ...

Re: Heirloom Model 1894 (circa 1898)

Thank you.

Yes, it's too bad about the way my dad stored the guns. In retrospect, it makes me wish that 1) I had checked on them periodically and taken them down to (at least) maintain their clean condition when he put them up, or 2) gone ahead and given them to me since my brother had and has no ...
